Sixteen Alverno Seniors Receive Lifetime Service Award
Sixteen members of Alverno High School’s graduating Class of
2011 have received the Father Joaquin Masmitjá Lifetime Service
Award.
This award is presented in the form of a gold tassel to any
graduating senior who has accumulated a minimum 420 service
hours throughout their four years at Alverno High School.
“The gospel tells us that “Whatsoever you do to the least of my
brethren you do for me,” says Alverno Campus Minister Susana
Capra. “These young women consistently triple their service hours
and make community service not only a school requirement, but
a part of their daily lives.” As well as giving so generously of their
time, the students were required to write an essay reflecting on what
service has meant to them and to the community that they serve.
The award is named after the founder of the Immaculate Heart
of Mary order, which sponsored the order now known as the
Immaculate Heart Community. IHC now sponsors Alverno High
School.

PUSD NAMES SCHOOL PRINCIPALS
Pasadena, CA - The Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD)
welcomes two new school principals in the 2011-2012 academic
year and is conducting a search for a new principal of Marshall
Fundamental Secondary School.
Marcheta Williams, Ed.D., has been named principal of Norma
Coombs Alternative School, which serves approximately 375
students. Dr. Williams joins PUSD from the Alameda Unified
School District, where she was an elementary school principal and
the district’s Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) coordinator.
Previously, she was a music educator in the Oakland Unified
School District, where she also served as principal and assistant
principal. Dr. Williams began her career as an elementary music
teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
“Dr. Williams brings leadership and a strong instructional
background to Norma Coombs,” said interim PUSD
Superintendent John Pappalardo. “Her experience will be
beneficial to the students and families of Norma Coombs.”
Dr. Williams has a Bachelor of Music from the University
of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, a Master’s of
Education from the University of Southern California (USC),
and a Doctorate of Education from the University of California,
Berkeley.
Earlier this spring, Sierra Madre School assistant principal
Garrett Newsom was promoted to planning principal of
Sierra Madre School’s middle school campus, and will lead the
development of curriculum and support services. The campus
is under construction and is scheduled to open in fall of 2013.
The search for a principal of the elementary school is currently
underway after the retirement of long-time principal Gayle
Bluemel in June.
PUSD is conducting a search for the new principal of Marshall
Fundamental Secondary School following the departure this
summer of Keith Derrick, who accepted a position as principal
of San Marino High School.
Looking Into The Life Of A Teenager
By Meaghan Allen
Harry Potter!
For as great as the summer has been, there was one negative
aspect: I wasn’t going to be home for the final Harry Potter film. That
meant that I wasn’t going to be able to stand outside the theater for
hours with my friends and dress up in crazy costumes or read the
books to each other aloud or have epic wand duels. I was going to be
somewhere in the middle of the country, possibly hours away from
the nearest movie theater, and just think about all that I was missing
out on! It also did not help that my Harry Potter mania was at an all
time high because my dorm at Brown was Emma Watson’s dorm, so
my dorm-mates and I were constantly watching Harry Potter clips
and quoting the movies. And they were all talking about how excited
they were to see the midnight showing and how they were going to
make Hedwig or Dobby costumes. Everyone except me.
As my dad and I were driving west back home this sad truth
bothered me as we passed posters and billboards for the movie.
I thought it was a hopeless cause to try and see the film anytime
close to is release, thinking that it would be a sold-out show. Then
luck struck. We were driving through Cleveland, Ohio and my dad
suggested we try anyways. We found a Regal Theater in an odd part
of town, and I remember that as I approached the ticket-lady my
heart was pounding with anxiety, waiting for a rejection that never
came. She sold me the two tickets for $7.50 each and I felt as though
I had won something great. Ultimately I saw the movie only 12 hours
later than the rest of my friends, not bad in my book.
