SANTA ANITA PARK:

MORE THAN A RACE TRACK

Recently I was given a
tour of Santa Anita Park
by Ms. Elizabeth Booth,
Special Events Coordinator,
and what an awesome
experience it was. First
of all, Santa Anita Park is
known for the horse races.
There’s a lot of excitement right now because the
Breeder’s Cup is coming next year in 2012. Anyone
who has seen or read Seabiscuit will enjoy seeing
the statue of him at the Park! However, there’s
much more. Right now, there is not live racing
going on. However there is something special to
do and it’s free! The Seabiscuit Tram Tour! You
board the Seabisuit Tram at Clockers Corner
and take a tour of the stable area, receiving barn
and paddock gardens. You will meet Fighting
Furrari, who played the primary role in the film,
and also carriage horses in their home under the
grandstand. The tour also includes Seabiscuit’s
original stall and barn, areas used during the
filming of the movie, Seabiscuit, the jockeys’
room, silks room, saddling paddock and walking
ring with its topiaries and statues. Tours depart
at 8:30 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. every Saturday and
Sunday, weather permitting, from Clockers’
Corner (west of the grandstand). For further info
and reservations for groups, call (626) 574-6677.

There are SO many facilities available for
all types of occasions and all-size groups.
Some beautiful rooms I saw included the
Directors’ Room, the Chandelier Room and the
Frontrunners Restaurant. One can book any
group event from a company picnic to an awards
dinner or a holiday party. I even saw wedding
photos. The inside rooms are gorgeous-beautiful
antique furniture and crystal chandeliers! Once,
a representative from the Antique Road Show
came and he was blown away by the furnishings
in the various rooms. The possibilities are
unlimited. Either call Elizabeth Booth at 626-
574-6474 or go to www.santaanita.com .

“The L.A. County Fair offers plenty of fun
and entertainment, but we’re also founded on
educating the community and showing how we
can give back to make a difference in the world
around us, especially through organizations
like City of Hope,” said Leslie Galerne-Smith,
Fairplex communications and public relations
manager. “Nearly 1.4 million people attended the
L.A. County Fair last year. Raising awareness on
health-related issues such as cancer is a critical
role we play in the betterment of our community.”
On Friday, Sept. 16, City of Hope’s bloodmobile
will be on-site to accept blood donations, a
critical need for cancer patients in treatment
and recovery. Also on Sept. 16, L.A. County
Fair will host Be The Match, the national bone
marrow donor registry that helps patients who
are battling cancers like leukemia and lymphoma
find potentially lifesaving donors. The Center of
Community Alliance for Research and Education
(CCARE) will be available Friday, Sept. 9, to
educate fair patrons about cancer prevention.

“We’re grateful for the support from the L.A.
County Fair for the lifesaving work of our experts
so that together we can help save more lives,” said
Jill Kendall, program director, National Marrow
Donor Program. “This is an opportunity to
expand awareness and build support throughout
the Greater Los Angeles community for
advanced science and new therapies, thus giving
greater hope to patients and their families.”
The L.A. County Fair will be open Saturday,
Sept. 3 through Sunday, Oct. 2, closed on
Mondays and Tuesdays except Labor Day.
