Looking Into The Life Of A Teenager

 By Meaghan Allen

SUCCESS

I do not think that I have ever
been more nervous in my entire
life. For days I was anticipating
this interview, looking up
questions, how to dress, act, etc.
but I still felt I wasn’t prepared
enough. For the one block I
was at school, the clock seemed
to stop and time dragged on. I
was to be at USC by 2 for my
interview with Lt. Matt Stewart
of the Air Force, even though
it was scheduled for 2:15. I
left school at 9:50 so I had
time to take deep breathes and
change into appropriate attire.
Everyone told me to relax, that
it was going to be okay, but I
don’t think they understand
how much I have riding on
the outcome of that interview.
If I am granted a scholarship
with Air Force ROTC, all my
colleges will remain an option,
but if I don’t, my college option
pool shrinks drastically.

The drive to USC wasn’t bad
at all, and I arrived to the USC
campus at 1:15, but parking was
a nightmare. As I walked up the
Physical Education building
steps at 2, home of USC’s ROTC,
I was so glad I had left home
at 12:30, especially because it
took me about five minutes to
find the AFROTC office. As I
entered, my nerves seemed to
melt away, and once Lt. Stewart
took me into his office for the
interview, I was ready. Talking
was easy, and although I could
have been more coherent in
some of my explanations, he
said I interviewed very well.
He even introduced me to his
Captain before I left, something
I don’t know how to feel about.

As I left campus my outlook
on my future brightened and I
couldn’t help but feel confident
in my success. In three weeks I
will know, all I have to do now,
is wait, and think, “Air power!”.
