St. Rita Students Return from
Washington D.C. Trip

Fourteen members from the St. Rita eighth-
grade class had a trip to remember over
their recent Spring Break. They toured
the nation’s capital on a non-stop, 5-day
itinerary that incorporated many of the D.C.
area memorials with neighboring cities.

The graduating students look forward to the

annual trip, which provides them with the
opportunity to spend a week together in our
nation’s capital. They were accompanied this
year by nine chaperones and even caught a
baseball game at Camden Yards.

“It was a fantastic time and I was so proud
of how attentive and respectful our students
were,” said Ellen Hoffman, St. Rita teacher
and chaperone. “ It was so exciting

to experience places like Gettysburg,
Arlington Nat’l Cemetery, the Capitol
building, Smithsonian and Mount Vernon
with the kids!”

St. Rita School, located at 322 N. Baldwin
Ave. in Sierra Madre, is a Catholic parish
school, ranked fourth in the Los Angeles
Diocese, with a focus on faith, stewardship
and academic excellence.

Looking Into The Life Of A Teenager

 By Meaghan Allen

MUSICAL ME

Sometimes in a movie, there are moments when you
wish that you had that song playing in the background –
the subtle cue that something romantic is going to happen
or intense music for awesome adventure. Or that song that
is just right - expressing everything without having to say
anything. A soundtrack for your life.

Well, in my religion class we have been assigned a music
project where we take eight songs – four from ‘childhood’
and four from high school (one for each year) and analyze
them: print the lyrics and present them with how you
felt and what was happening. This is Freudian approach
supposed to help us reflect who we are as a person and who
we have been by looking at music from important stages
in our lives. It sounds a little tedious, but it is has actually
been a lot of fun and has made me realize a lot about myself
and how music has played a role in my life. Like why I
listened to ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ constantly or
why whenever I hear ‘Two Tickets to Paradise’ I feel seven
years old again. And finding songs I always listened to but
never knew the words until now, and then comparing what
was happening in my life at the time – it is crazy! So there
may not be a musical cue (although who knows) or music
playing during every day events, but it is cool to realize that
there is a soundtrack to my life, and one that I know I love
all the songs to.

ST. RITA LAUNCHES JUNIOR
KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM

 Registration is now open for
admission into the new Junior
Kindergarten program at
St. Rita School for the 2012-
2013 academic year. The full-
day program, available to 4
and 5-year olds, will prepare
students for classroom routines
with plenty of time for free-
exploration.
The developmentally-based
curriculum is designed for the
“early 5-year old” who is ready
to move beyond pre-school.
Teacher-directed and child-
initiated activities will prepare
students for kindergarten
and foster development in
the areas of language, math,
literacy, imaginative play,
social awareness, construction,
technology, art and music.

 “We’re delighted to fill this
long-standing need in our
community,” said Principal
Joanne Harabedian. “We are
looking forward to launching
a program that will bridge the
transition from nursery school to
formal schooling, while focusing
on the children’s social, physical
and cognitive development.”

 The Junior program’s day is
from 8am to 3pm with after-
school care available. Enrollment
packets are available in the school
office for students who will be 4
1/2 by September of this year.
Contact the school office at (626)
355-6114 for more information.
