Duarte’s Four Shining Stars

By Joan Schmidt

Last week, I wrote about Arcadia’s
Bright Star, table tennis whiz, Erica
Wu who’s headed to the Summer
Olympics.

Now it’s time to shift gears in
another direction and meet four
amazing young women from
Duarte and Monrovia, who were
recently recognized at the Duarte
City Council Meeting. Their names are Lorilei Near,
Dominque Stumbaugh, Faith Torres, and Amina
Walker. These girls are members of Girl Scout Troop
# 4541 from the Monrovia/Duarte Service Unit. As
I have said before, you may have awesome youths,
but you need an outstanding teacher/coach/leader to
have them reach their potential. It is only fitting that
these girls have remarkable Troop Leaders, Deanna Stumbaugh and Claudia Stumbaugh. If
Deanna sounds familiar, she should. She teaches Special Education at Royal Oaks Elementary
School in Duarte, and was the District’s Teacher of the Year!

Troop #4541 is a long standing troop deeply rooted within the community. The four
girls who achieved the Silver Award - Lorilei Near, Dominique Stumbaugh, Faith Torres,
and Amina Walker, are all strong leaders within girl scouting, their schools, and in their
community. In addition, all of the girls maintain high grades within the two school districts
to include Northview Jr. High Valedictorian of last year.

To achieve their Silver Award, the girls’ service project was a personal one. They voted to
give back to the community. One of the girls had been a victim of domestic violence, so they
chose an organization that helped her and her family as they navigated through the issues
surrounding domestic violence to bring about a safe environment and violence free lifestyle.

The Santa Anita Family Service’s Domestic Violence Program, located in Monrovia, is
still dedicated to helping women and children who have been battered, recover and move
on with their lives. Therefore the troop decided to hold a collection drive in which they
collection donations to restock and update the children’s therapy room and play center.
Those donations included educational games, arts and crafts materials, therapy dress-up
play station items, stuffed animals, and also butterfly-themed decorations for the newly
painted room. The girls finished their project by delivering, cleaning, organizing and setting
up the room to provide a fun, interactive, and inviting atmosphere.

Congratulations to Lorilei Near, Dominique Stumbaugh, Faith Torres and Amina Walker
for their much-deserved Silver Award. So many victims of domestic violence will surely
benefit from your hard work and dedication. And of course special thanks to your leaders
who helped make this possible.

PET OF THE WEEK

CHA-CHA: Animal ID #A4433503

Meet a friendly puppy that will
dance her way right into your heart,
Cha-Cha (A4433603). Cha-Cha
is a mellow one and one half year
old black and fawn female German
Shepherd mix who was jettisoned
at the Baldwin Park Animal Care
Center on May 23rd because her
former owner moved and made no
provision for their dog. Weighing
forty-six pounds, this well behaved
girl walks okay on the leash and is
very well socialized.

Good with other dogs, we think
she will be very good with children.
Cha-Cha is a gem of a dog that will
make an outstanding indoor pet
and companion for a family living
in a private home. To watch a video of the beautiful Cha-Cha, please visit: www.youtube.
com/watch?v=yPjkH6GHeVc

To meet Cha-Cha in person, please see her at the Baldwin Park Shelter, located at 4275 N.
Elton, Baldwin Park, CA 91706 (Phone: 626-430-2378 or 626-962-3577). She is currently
available now. For any inquiries about Cha-Cha, please reference her animal ID number:
A4433603. The shelter is open seven days a week, 12 pm-7 pm Monday-Thursday and
10am-5pm Friday-Sunday. This is a high-intake shelter with a great need for adoptions. For
