Part-time Senior Program Specialist - Closes November 9, 2012

Location: Sierra Madre, California, United States |Department: 
Community Services 

GENERAL PURPOSE

Under the direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, the Program 
Specialist – Senior Center is a front line position that plans and implements 
recreation programs and community services for patrons of all ages 
and in particular seniors in the Sierra Madre community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be 
construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and 
assigned.

• Assists the Recreation Supervisor in overseeing senior programming;

• Enforces Department policies and procedures;

• Implements Department programs as directed;

• Researches, develops and recommends policy, procedures, and/or programs 
as needed to the Recreation Supervisor;

• Prepares and coordinates program publicity, including press releases, 
flyers, pamphlets, and brochures for review by Recreation Supervisor;

• Measures program effectiveness through evaluation reports;

• Reports program and event activities through written monthly status 
updates;

• Leads daily activities such as arts and crafts, sports, games, special 
events and field trips;

• Plans and implements special programs and events.

• Supervises special community events and programs;

• Identifies classes of interest and recruits instructors;

• Assist in maintaining facilities, grounds, and equipment. Report need for 
maintenance when discovered; 

• Assists in registration and maintaining administrative records; 

• Files accident reports and program documentation;

• Communicates effectively with patrons of all ages; 

• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with supervisors, 
co-workers, and the public;

• Promotes good service and professionalism to staff and volunteers; 

• Continually promotes, in actions, words and writing, the highest customer 
service standards;

• Performs related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES

Knowledge of:

• Theories, principles, procedures, standards, practices, information 
sources and trends in the field of recreation programs and services; 

• Applicable federal, State and local health and safety codes and 
regulations; 

• Functions and practices of a municipal recreation unit; 

• Basic recreation services practices, including program planning, 
promotion, budgeting, goal setting, work planning, and organization; 

• Computer efficiency utilizing Word, Publisher and Excel. Adobe 
Create Suite experience a bonus. 

• Program evaluation practices; 

• Customer service techniques.

Ability to:

• Plan, organize, and implement programs and activities mainly for 
seniors, but for patrons of all ages; 

• Respond to the public under stressful circumstances in a fair, 
calm and understanding way to obtain positive results;

• Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing in the 
English language; 

• Appear to work on time and in uniform; 

• Attend staff meetings and training; 

• Assist in cleaning and maintaining facilities; 

• Understand and enforce City and Department policies; 

• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-
workers, supervisors, and the general public; 

• Operate independently without the need of constant supervision;

• Exercise professional judgment;

• Function in a high energy environment;

• Provide quality customer service. 

Education/Training/Experience: Incumbent must have at least 60 semester 
units from an accredited college with major course work in recreation/
leisure services, public administration or closely related field. Minimum of 
one year of responsible experience in the recreation/leisure field. Experience 
with senior program planning and public recreation preferred.

Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements: Must possess a current 
American Red Cross certificate in First Aid/CPR/AED for Schools and 
the Community or obtain by time of employment as well as a valid Class 
C California driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under 
the City’s Vehicle Usage Policy.

COMPENSATION

• Salary range: $12.24 to $14.88 per hour. Approximately 15 hours/
week; maximum 960 hours per fiscal year.

• A mandatory deferred compensation plan is offered in lieu of 
Social Security withholding.

• This is a part-time position and as such offers no sick leave or 
benefits.
