MAYOR’S PRAYER BREAKFAST, ENTERTAINING
AND MEANINGFUL By Joan Schmidt

Recently I attended the best Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast ever in Arcadia! Festivities began
with Presentation of Colors by Boy Scout Troop125, Pledge of Allegiance by former City Clerk Jim
Barrows and an amazing rendition of the National Anthem by Stu Henderson, accompanied by
Tabitha Henken. After Reverend Philip Wood, Pastor of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church,
gave the Invocation, Mayor Bob Harbicht came to the Podium and acknowledged all the past Mayors,
current City Council Members, Superintendent Dr. Joel Shawn, Supervisor Mike Antonovich and
Pasadena Star News Editor Frank Girardot. The Mayor then gave a great address, recalling how our
country began…the first rebels were local farmers, townspeople, not professional soldiers. “Would
we be brave enough to take up arms and fight professional soldiers?”

After the Mayor’s thought-provoking speech, we were treated to a beautiful musical
presentation by students from Barnhart School. Their selections included “You’re a Grand Old Flag”,
“Fifty Great States” and “This Land is Your Land”.

The Keynote Speaker, Tim Conway, Jr. followed and he had us all in stitches. He is the Radio
Host for KFL and loves to go to Santa Anita Race Track. The track provided a source for many of his
jokes.

Mr. Conway also noted that there were several former Arcadia mayors at the event. He quipped,
“Arcadia has a lot of former Mayors. Did the FBI come through here recently?”

And we also were introduced to Trainer Doug O’Neill and former Santa Anita CEO Mark Verge,
who both spoke of their love of horse racing. It was a morning of surprises and seeing familiar faces!

The event ended with a special musical performance by the Tzu Chi Charity Foundation, “Love and
Care for Our Land” performed while doing sign language.

NOTED EDUCATOR TO SPEAK AT ARCADIA
AAUW MEETING

What can we learn from China’s education system, and what can they learn from
ours? Innovative educator Nancy Pine, Ph.D., will explain that sharing and contrasting of
ideas when she speaks at the Monday evening, April 8 meeting of the Arcadia Branch of the
American Association of University Women (AAUW). Nancy Pine is a professor emerita of
Mount St. Mary’s College, Los Angeles. During her extensive career in education, Pine has
taught at all levels, been widely published, presided at many workshops, and has received
numerous awards.

At Mount St. Mary’s, Pine was director of the Elementary Education Program for ten years
and founder of the Bridging Cultures: U.S./China Program. During her years of teaching,
Pine also did cross-cultural research with her counterparts in China, traveling to China
often to visit classrooms and to do research. Now Pine’s cross-cultural research has led to
the publication of her groundbreaking book “Educating Young Giants: What Kids Learn
(And Don’t Learn) in China and America.”

Nancy Pine’s book has received high acclaim from educators and others in both the U. S.
and China. It was recently recommended by CHOICE, the American Library Association
publication that is used by all U.S. university and college libraries. Pine’s report is unbiased.
Her cross-cultural research explains that each country wants what the other has: The U.S.
wants students to be more studious, focused, and expert at math, and the Chinese want
students to be more innovative and able to create imaginative ideas. Pine does offer some
solutions and ways to achieve those desires.

The public is cordially invited to attend the Arcadia Branch AAUW meeting. The
group

meets in the Church of the Good Shepherd’s Jordan Hall, 400 W. Duarte Rd. (SW corner of
Duarte Rd. and Holly Ave.), Arcadia. Socializing and refreshments begin at 6:30 pm with

Dr. Nancy Pine’s presentation to follow at 7:00 pm. There is no charge for the meeting, and
ample parking is available in the church parking lot. Pine’s book “Educating Young Giants”
is available at Vroman’s Pasadena, where she recently gave a book talk. The book will also
be available for purchase at the AAUW meeting.

Membership in the American Association of University Women is open to women
and men holding a university or college degree, as well as to those with an Associate of Arts
degree or its equivalent. For more information, please call Tamara Kato at (626) 375-6756
