HIKERS FALL 200 FEET IN EATON

CANYON - Girl Dies from Head Injuries

GOING, GOING, GONE!

In a tragic turn of events, a 17 year old Alhambra teen, Esther Suen ,fell to her
death in Eaton Canyon on Friday morning. Another member of the group
of four, an 18 year old male, also fell 200 feet and was airlifted to Huntington
Hospital. His condition was unknown at press time.

It was reported that Suen died as a result of head injuries, however, the coroner’s
office will be conducting an autopsy to determine the official cause of
death.

The Altadena Sheriff’s Department confirmed that the incident occurred in
the canyon just north of Altadena. The other hikers in the group, another 17
year old female and 18 year old male were not injured. A full investigation is
being conducted by the LA County Sheriff Department.

SUNSHINE RETURNS TO THE FESTIVAL

The demolition of the former Skilled Nursing Center on Sierra Madre Blvd. began on Monday. The site, which once
housed Sierra Madre’s hospital and has been the subject of much controversy the last 7 years, is being razed so that the
construction of The Kensington Assisted Living Facility can begin. Top photos by S. Henderson/Bottom photo by Ron

The new Kensington Sierra Madre potentially creates over 200 new construction jobs during an anticipated 16 month
build period culminating in the hiring of as many as 90 full and part time professional staff that will help care for
residents.

Residents will be accommodated within 75 assisted living suites where family and loved ones will be welcome. Additionally,
generous community and common space will available, a café where residents can gather with friends and

family, a fireplace parlor, library, media and art studios and ample courtyards and gardens for outside seating and relaxing
as well. A webpage with photos is available to view here: http://thekensingtonsierramadre.com/.

Maybe it was the ‘Luck of the Irish’, or maybe
it was just time, but for the first time in three
years, Sierra Madre’s Wistaria Festival had
dry weather. Held on St. Patrick’s Day, the
119 year old vine drew more than 1,000 visitors
by foot and shuttle to see its splendor. In
addition, the exhibits of 80 crafters, a dozen
food vendors, local artists, numerous local
and regional non profit groups and our own
local merchants drew additional visitors to Sierra
Madre. As one shopper said, “I’ve been
so busy shopping that I completely ran out of
time to see the vine!”

The event is sponsored by the Sierra Madre
Chamber of Commerce with support from
Athens Services, The Kensington, Southern
California Edison and The Gas Company.

Mayor Pro Tem Nancy Walsh, inset, has been credited for being the
‘lucky charm’ that brought good weather to the Festival, but it may
have been the melodic sounds of the Flower of the Flock in Kersting
Court. (above). Photo by Dean Lee

The Sierra Madre Friends of the Arts, Patricia Ancona, Sherrinn Mullen Ancona,
Lazaro Arvizu, Kathleen Carey, Tracy Chamberlin, Susie Cortez, David
Em, Lee Anne Graves, Stephen Johnstone, Jennifer Lindstrom, Sarah Prescott,
Nicole Mililani Scanlan, Anibal Silveyra, and Camellia Steele created an Artist’s
Alley on Windsor Lane.

Music was provided by: The Subs, New Astroturf, ? and The Wistarians,
Snotty Scotty and the Hankies, Flower of the Flock, Gem City Jazz
Cats,Homegrown, Chico’s Bail Bonds , Ron Longo, and Terry Gucma at various
