TEMPLE STATION’S AWESOME VOLUNTEER
SQUAD AND HONORING THE BLESSED MOTHER
By Joan Schmidt
Some years back, Annunciation Parish began a special Procession honoring the Blessed Mother,
close to “October 7”, the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. The Procession begins at Annunciation
Church, proceeds north on Peck Road, east on Camino Real, South on Myrtle and west on Longden,
back to the Church.
Four men carry the statue of “Our Lady of Fatima” who appeared to the three children, Lucia,
and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco in 1916 in Portugal and urged people to pray the rosary. Jacinta
and Francisco died in 1918, but Lucia lived a long life as a cloistered nun and died on February13,
2005 at the age of 97.
Behind the statue, walked the Pastor Father Eugene Herbert and many parishioners. As
they walked, they prayed the rosary and carried two banners. I observed two white Temple Sheriff’s
Station“Volunteers on Patrol” vehicles-one leading the procession and one at the end. I arrived at the
Church the same time as Deputy April Nelson in a patrol unit, just as the Procession was finishing
and ending at the Church. I commented that the volunteers were on scene, where as last year, there
had been two patrol units. Because of cutbacks, there is less man power. Also a priority situation arise
which the deputies had to respond to. If these two “Volunteer on Patrol” units were not available,
there would have been no accompaniment on the procession! Perhaps that’s possible on Peck
Road. However, Myrtle Avenue’s speed is 40mph which mean 45+! Father Eugene, Annunciation
parishioners and I are MOST GRATEFUL to these fine volunteers. I don’t believe people realize what
a tremendous help they are. Deputy Nelson just reiterated what I said, and how invaluable they are
to Temple Station! Thank you, Volunteers on Patrol!
