Monrovia Police Blotter
Happy 50th Anniversary, MAFA!
By Joan Schmidt
“MAFA”, the Monrovia Association of Fine Arts is an all-volunteer nonprofit organization
whose key goals are to promote local artists and provide mentoring opportunities to encourage our
young people to experience art and hopefully develop the future leadership of MAFA. This past
weekend, MAFA had a great festival and marked their 50th Anniversary at Monrovia’s Library Park.
There were so many great display booths, which featured all kinds of paintings, photography, screen
painting, different types of handcrafted jewelry, rock displays, pottery and much more. Throughout
the day there was great entertainment. When I arrived, Centre Stage young girls performed various
hits, danced and used hula hoops for a number. When I left to continue distributing newspapers, a
Folklorio ensemble was entering the Park and they were accompanied by some musicians. There also
were arts and crafts for all ages, an authors’ section in cooperation with the Friends of the Monrovia
Library, and a silent auction to raise funding. It was a great event to celebrate and to support a great
organization. Please visit www.monroviafinearts.org for more information.

TIP OF THE WEEK
Red Ribbon Week Reminds Parents to Talk to Your Kids About Drugs
October 23 through 31, the Monrovia Police Department will celebrate Red Ribbon Week 2013.
Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign to raise awareness about substance abuse among our
youth and our communities. In 1985, DEA Agent Enrique, “Kiki,” Camarena was murdered by a
drug cartel. To honor his memory and to show support that we will continue the fight against illegal
drugs, Monrovia Police Officers will wear red ribbons and red bracelets as part of our uniform to
support the fight against illegal drugs, alcohol, and tobacco use.
Parents are the most powerful influence in a child’s life in preventing drug use, alcohol use, and
other risking behavior. Talk to your children early about drugs before they become involved. Be
involved in their lives, keep them occupied with activities, spend time with them, and know who
their friends are. Drug abuse can start at a very young age, so you need to know who your children
are with at all times. One of the hardest things as a parent is knowing how to keep your child away
from drugs and alcohol.
