HILLSIDES LAUNCHES HOLIDAY TOY DRIVE
IN 55 LOCAL STARBUCKS STORES
DUARTE, AZUSA AND GLENDORA:
HOST TOWN for Special Olympics World Games 2015
Twenty-five volunteers from local Starbucks stores helped assemble and decorate 55 donation boxes that will
be used to collect toys in participating Starbucks stores during Starbucks annual toy drive benefiting Hillsides.
By Joan Schmidt
It began when a guest speaker at a “Cities” meeting
explained Special Olympic World Games 2015 “Host
Town” program. Duarte’s then Mayor Liz Reilly and
Council Member Sam Kang looked at each other and
said, “Let’s do this.” Liz worked diligently over the next
several months. Obstacles included enough facilities
to house the athletes/coaches, but that didn’t deter Liz.
Azusa University offered its facilities, neighboring
cities of Azusa and Glendora came aboard, and the
culmination of this joint effort is the three cities being
a “Host Town”!
The “Host Town” is a special 3-day program prior
to the Opening Ceremony of the 2015 World Games.
At their Host Towns, athletic delegations from all
over the world are welcomed and celebrated. Their
Host Town schedules events-meet the community,
take part in cultural activities unique to its area and
practice and rest before the Games. The 100 Host
Towns can be large cities, small towns, or joint cities
from San Luis Obispo to San Diego.
This past Tuesday, there was a wonderful event at
Azusa Pacific University’s Dillon Field-a Host Town
flag presentation ceremony and all three Mayors
attended. Master of Ceremonies was Andrew Barton
from APU’s President Office. Speakers included APU
President, Jon Wallace who told the history of APU,
and its high ideals and “we’re so thankful and proud
to be part of the Host program”.
Azusa Mayor Joe Rocha read all of his City’s
Proclamation. He was proud to be part of “one of
the most heartfelt events…In 1968, Eunice Shriver
decided to work on her dream-inclusion…Azusa puts
God first, and our motto is –Never give up or give
in…Special Olympics ‘ motto is let me win or let me
be brave.” He then presented Proclamation and the
Key to the City of Azusa.
Duarte Mayor Tzeitel Paras-Caracci told us “It is
such a thrill to share in Special Olympics…the city
cannot contain its excitement. Our special Thanks
to Azusa, Glendora and APU for giving us the
opportunity for learning and cultural gain…excited
to share the City of Hope. She then presented a
Proclamation and Key to the City of Duarte.
Glendora Mayor Judy Nelson spoke…”We jumped
at the opportunity” to be a Host Town and spoke of
Rubel Castle and a hometown picnic where many
residents will come out and meet the Athletes. She
presented a Proclamation and a Plaque from the City
of Glendora.
Debi Anderson, 2015 World Games Messenger
revealed she has been participating in the Olympics
for seventeen years. She wore her Medal on Tuesday;
Debi participates in volleyball, bowling and
gymnastics.
Patrick McClenahan, President and CEO of
LA2015 praised APU-his son Eric graduated and
was a football star there. He also mentioned his
daughter Kelly who has cerebral palsy. He reminded
us of Eunice Shriver and her vision of “No exclusion”;
also Eunice’ husband Sargeant Shriver founder of the
Peace Corps.
Bryan Clay, an APU alumnus and Assistant Track
and Field Coach, won a silver Medal at the 2004
Olympics and a gold medal in the Decathlon at the
2008 Olympics . A devout Christian, he credits APU
for making his dreams come true.
Also attending were Glendora Council Member Joe
Santoro, Duarte Council Member Liz Reilly, Mayor
Pro Tem Sam Kang, City Manager Daryl George,
Assistant Karen Herrera , School Board Member
Reyna Diaz and APU’s Mascot and cheerleaders.

(PASADENA, CA) For the fifth year in a row, Starbucks
is sponsoring a toy drive in participating Starbucks
stores in the San Gabriel Valley and surrounding area.
This year, 55 stores will be participating. The drive
will run from December 12 – December 25.
Each store will feature a large white donation
box topped with a red gift box and decorated with
colorful holiday ribbon and a Hillsides poster. “We
are asking customers to please consider donating new,
unwrapped toys when they visit Starbucks,” said Laura
Kelso, Hillsides director of community resources.
“These gifts are incredibly important to the children
and families Hillsides serves because otherwise, they
may not receive anything for the holidays.”
Starbucks began its Hillsides toy drive in 2010
with donation boxes in 12 stores. Since then, the
number of participating stores has grown steadily
each year. “This toy drive has become a real
tradition for us,” said Starbucks district manager
Jennifer Vanderpool. “It feels good to partner with
a local San Gabriel charity so embedded in the
community and to create even more awareness of
Hillsides with our many customers.” She estimates
that the toy drive will collect some 2,000 toys for
children in need.
This year, Starbucks employees also assembled the
donation boxes that will be used in the stores. Twenty-
five Starbucks volunteers, ranging from baristas to
regional managers, spent three hours at Hillsides
main campus in Pasadena wrapping and decorating
the boxes.
In addition to its holiday support, Starbucks has
partnered with Hillsides Youth Moving On (YMO)
program, which provides youth formerly in foster
care or probation affordable quality housing and
numerous other support services. Starbucks has
hired two recent graduates of the YMO housing
program, and both youth have seen great success at
the company. One YMO hire was recently named
district partner of the year -- a distinction that only
four employees out of 300 was awarded.
“We are very thankful for the tremendous
generosity the local Starbucks community has shown
Hillsides during the holidays and throughout the
year with its support of our YMO program, and look
forward to a continued collaboration in the future,”
said Joseph M. Costa, Hillsides chief executive officer.
Hillsides, founded in 1913 and headquartered
in Pasadena, is a premier provider dedicated to
improving the overall well-being and functioning
of children, youth, and families in need throughout
Los Angeles County. To find a list of participating
Starbucks stores, please visit Hillsides news page.

ADVISORY: RESIDENTIAL BURGLARY REMAINS A
HOLIDAY FAVORITE CRIME. PLEASE REMAIN
VIGILANT - SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING!
Dear Nixle User,
Looking at the crime m ap pictured you would
not know it, but since Thanksgiving, residential
burglary has actually decreased slightly in Arcadia.
But, as you can see, from East Pasadena through
Arcadia, there are still a number of “Res Burgs”
being reported, particularly north of the freeway.
The majority of Arcadia burglaries have been
committed during daytime hours. Several of
the homes burglarized were targeted while the
residents were gone for a few days at a time. While
the Department places additional officers, both
in plain cars and marked units in problem areas,
we are not always in the right place at the right
time. Please remember to be vigilant in both your
observation of your neighborhood and with your
own home safety and security.
HERE are tips for preventing home burglary.
Remember, if you See Something, Say Something!
