Sierra Madre, CA (December 8, 2014) The Alverno High School
Jaguars broke in their new uniforms on a rainy December 3 afternoon
against the Glendale Nitros for their first non-conference game of the
season. Control of the ball went back and forth between the two teams for
the first half. The Jaguars first opportunity to score came late in the first
half as Junior forward Emma Cavender pressured the Nitros goalkeeper.
Coach Ken Berry made adjustments in the second half to add more
speed to the offense. Senior defender Olivia Rivas was moved to forward
and freshman defender Jazmin Rebollo was moved to outside-mid. Rivas
scored late in the second half. Freshman Subrina Hamdan defended well
in front of the goal and freshman goalkeeper Ayanna Melin made a save
from a Nitros corner kick to preserve the lead.

ANNUAL CANDLELIGHT
CELEBRATION REMAINS
A CHRISTMAS TRADITION
Candlelight Celebration included
choral performance and a live
reenactment of the Nativity
Sierra Madre, CA (December 18, 2014)
 On Wednesday, December 17, Alverno
High School hosted its annual Candlelight
Celebration at the Villa del Sol dOro on
campus. Candlelight Celebration, an annual
Christmas tradition at Alverno, celebrates the
Christmas story through a live reenactment
beginning with the Annunciation and
concluding with the Birth of Christ.
Upon arriving on campus, guests were
be provided with a candle and led to south side of the Villa where the procession began with an introduction by the President and Vice-
President of the Alverno Student Union and a tableau depicting the Annunciation of Mary. Guests were then led around the Villa making
several stops on their own journey to Bethlehem including seeing Mary visit Elizabeth, the first stop at the Inn in Bethlehem, the arrival of
Mary and Joseph at the stable, the birth of Jesus, and the visit from the shepherds and wise men. Each stop signified an important part of the
Christmas story and guests were invited to join in Christmas carols led by the Alverno choir at each stop.
Once guests had reached Bethlehem on the north side of the Villa, they enjoyed two dance performances Alvernos dance students before
being invited into the Villa for a final choral performance by both students and alumnae. A festive reception in the Villa followed the procession
and performances.
Candlelight is a time-honored tradition at Alverno that brings our entire community together, said Julia V. Fanara, Head of School. It is a
wonderful way to commence the Christmas season and remind us of the true meaning of the holiday. This event is an opportunity for Alverno
to wish all of our friends, family, and community members a wonderful Christmas season.

THE REEL DEAL: by Ben Show
EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS
The first trailer that I saw for this film made it look like the Lord of the
Rings: Return of the King of Bible movies; it looked very epic. The scope
of the movie was huge and it looked very action packed. So, I went into the
theater with high expectations.
Gods and Kings tells the story of Exodus: Moses (Christian Bale)
discovers that he is in fact a Hebrew and is chosen by God to lead his people
out of Egypt, which is currently ruled by his brother Ramses (Joel Edgerton).
This movie covers everything from Moses exile, crossing the Red Sea, and
the creation of the Ten Commandments.
Gods and Kings is a very poor rebelling of the Exodus stories. The
visuals are on the level of Return of the King and the production value was
obviously very high, but this film is hindered by a very, very weak script,
which makes the film move very slowly. Gods and Kings is not a bad movie
but it is also not a good movie; it is two and a half hours of gorgeous looking
empty shell of a movie.
