LA SALLE PLAYS

SOUTH KOREAN

TEAM IN BASEBALL

Photo: John Blackstock

Pasadena, CA – The La Salle Lancer Baseball team hosted South
Korea’s Duk Soo High School in a winter league baseball game on
January 27 at La Salle’s home field at Arcadia County Park. This was
the second year playing this friendship game.

After a big six-run first inning, the Lancers held off a Duk Soo
comeback to win 7-6. Duk Soo High School produces some very
good athletes who go on to play major league baseball in South
Korea.

Both teams were excited to have the experience of a cross
continental baseball experience as well as the cultural introductions.
The teams are pleased with their new-found friendship and hope to
make this game an annual event.

THE REEL DEAL: by Ben Show

BIRDMAN REVIEW

I never saw a trailer for this and only actually stared hearing about
this film at the beginning of awards season.

Everyone who I talked to was saying that this was a really good
film and it started racking up awards as awards season started.

So, I decided to try ‘Birdman’ out.

Riggan (Michael Keaton) is struggling to get his play off the
ground. With the help of Jake (Zach Galifianakis), his assistant,
they replace one of their injured actors with Mike Shiner (Edwards
Norton), a respected stage actor who they discover may be even
crazier than Riggan, who has conversations with the Birdman, an
old role that he played in a movie, in his ‘Birdman’ is a strange film.

 On the one hand, the acting and cinematography are excellent;
the performances are spectacular and the single-shot used to
capture them is nothing less than revolutionary. However, things
start to fall apart with the story and music. The story is basically one
big ego boost for Michael Keaton, who is once again trying to get
acting work. The storyline is sloppy, at some times very, very boring,
and is filled with strange events that leave you wondering whether
or not this is all actually happening. The music was the final nail in
the coffin. The incessant drumming seems to tear away at what little
you like about the movie until you realize that ‘Birdman’ is nothing
more than a newbie director’s attempt to make an interesting,
revolutionary movie, but actually comes off as a narcissistic ego trip
into the world of the famous Hollywood actors that populate this
film.
