23-year-old Hispanic male was cited and released in the
field. His vehicle was impounded for 30 days.

Just after 12:56 a.m., officers responded to the
area of Naomi Avenue and Holly Avenue regarding a
suspicious male riding a bicycle. Officers made contact

stolen from the victim’s porch since December. No
suspects were seen and no witnesses were located.

belongings from the room, but did not see them carrying
a television. The person who the room was registered to
was arrested earlier this morning. The investigation is
ongoing.

Friday, January 30:

Just after 6:05 a.m., an officer responded to a residence
in the 300 block of West Palm Drive regarding a

22-year-old Hispanic male, the officer detected a strong
odor of alcohol emitting from his breath. A series of tests
confirmed the driver was under the influence of alcohol
and had a blood alcohol content greater than 0.08%. He
was arrested and transported to the Arcadia City Jail for
booking. The vehicle was released to a sober driver.

At approximately 7:45 p.m., an officer responded to a
residence in the 1500 block of Lovell Avenue regarding

MONROVIA CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH

The Monrovia-Duarte Black Alumni Association
in conjunction with the School District and the
Monrovia Historical Museum continue the proud
tradition of celebrating Black History Month. The
national theme for 2015 is “A Century of Black
Life, History, and Culture.” Eloise Hart, president
of the Black Alumni Association said, “We want
to reach out to every classroom in Monrovia’s
K-12 system.” She continued, “We are doing
art festivals, movie nights, and storytelling at
the schools.” Joannie Yuille, coordinator of this
program, added, “The New Buffalo Soldiers –
and their horses - will be visiting Monrovia High
School on February 24th. That’s very exciting indeed. The original Buffalo
Soldiers were commissioned by the American government to help settle
the West in the 19th century. ”

The artist, Hope Demetriades, will be interviewed by KGEM’s Ralph
Walker about her exhibit at the Monrovia Museum on two Sundays, Feb
8 and Feb 15, from 1 to 4 pm. “I was so moved by the bravery, vision, and
triumph of our American abolitionists that I wanted to canonize them,”
said the multimedia artist.

It was in 1926 that historian Carter Woodson first suggested “Negro
History Week”. Woodson had the foresight to insist that primary emphasis
be placed on expanding the understanding of African American history
in public schools. During this nation’s bicentennial, President Gerald Ford
officially recognized Black History Month and encouraged the nation to
“seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments
of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.” A
tradition was born.

Joannie Yuille said, “The highlight of our 2015
celebration is a luncheon that is open to all. We’ll
have inspiring speakers, gospel choirs, multimedia
surprise, plus delicious soul food.” Tickets are $10.
On that Sunday, Feb 22 (2 pm), at the Monrovia
Community Center on Palm, Hope Demestriades
and Professors Wilma Ellis Kazemzadeh and Lua
Kamal Yuille are scheduled to speak. Kazemzadeh
was Vice President of Spellman College and in
1989, she received the Women of Conscience
Award from the National Council of Women.
Professor Yuille teaches at the School of Law at the
University of Kansas. “We want to move forward in American history. We
want to be proactive and give a message of hope,” said her mother, Joannie.

Joannie Yuille was born and raised in Monrovia, “When I was
in school, there were few positive images of African Americans. The
curriculum and the television provided limited role models. My parents
were great role models and purposely shared the history of African
American with the family but it should come from many sources.
Today, as a parent and grandparent, I know I have the responsibility to
help our community of all races, creeds and colors to understand and
experience American history. We all should be committed to expanding
the education of all our children.” The Monrovia-Duarte Black Alumni
Association has been active in the local community for about 15 years.
Eloise Hart said, “It is fun for us to get together as alumni, but we are
also about giving back.” For more information, contact Eloise Hart at
(626) 236-7610.
