LETTER TO THE EDITOR

SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION 

 I received a mailer from candidate Siraganian and it left me 
with one question. In this attack piece she stated that Larry 
Torres helped found City of Angles School and is the "curriculum 
coordinator. She then pointed out that this school is one of the 
worst performing schools in the state and that the majority of the 
students there are below proficient in English and math. The piece 
was about curriculum standards and the implication was clearly 
that Mr Torres is somehow responsible for this purported poor 
performance.

 Although it appears that candidate Siraganian had done some 
research to come up with the statistics she cited, she left out one 
key detail: City of Angels is a Continuation School, one for "at- 
risk" kids that have not succeeded in normal schools. It serves all 
sorts of students, is a school of 2000 kids on San Pedro street in 
LA, composed of 90% minority population, abut 80% Hispanic, 
and serves kids that are among the neediest and most challenging 
of any student population in the country. Of course they have 
statistics far below normal schools, this is a school for kids that 
have burdens placed on them that most people couldn't bear. This 
is a school that does tremendous things for kids most in need.

 All I could think of is one thing - What kind of person would 
put out such a bald faced half truth? How does this real estate 
agent believe she is qualified to question the effectiveness of a 
curriculum for a special needs school ?

 This is a total and clearly intentional misrepresentation, and I 
hope the average voter spends 5 minutes Googling "City of Angels 
School" to better understand just what kind of an institution this 
candidate is deriding while giving the impression that it is a 
normal school that is performing poorly because of Larry Torres.
