Informal 
Talks 

Desiderio Army Reserve 
Center to be Demolished

 Pasadena Councilmember 
Steve Madison, city officials 
and the San Gabriel Valley 
Habitat for Humanity will hold 
a demolition kickoff event 
Thursday at Desiderio Army 
Reserve Center marking the 
beginning of the long awaited 
Desiderio Project. 

 The event highlights the 
pending demolition and 
transformation of the former 
5.17-acre U.S. Army Reserve 
Center into single-family 
bungalow homes by the San 
Gabriel Valley Habitat for 
Humanity and a 3.87-acre city 
park.

 Neighborhood Park features 
include an open turf area 
“Meadow” with trees, security 
lighting, walkways that loop 
around and through the park, 
site furnishings, play equipment 
and restrooms. A new 1.29-
acre bungalow courtyard will 
include nine single family 
homes. The total project cost is 
estimated at $3 million.

 The city council approved the 
neighborhood park/affordable 
housing concept in 2007. 

 Desiderio Army Reserve 
Center is at 655 Westminster 
Dr. Light refreshments will be 
served. Demolition is expected 
to be completed in December 
city staff said.


The Wiggle Waggle Walk is Back

 
Topics will include the 
Albertson’s blighted 
shopping center and new 
landscaping for the Sierra 
Madre median. 

 Thousands of animal lovers will 
join their four-legged friends for 
the 17th Annual Wiggle Waggle 
Walk community dog walk, 
fundraiser and Pet Expo later 
this month

 Pasadena Humane Society 
officals said the event, held at 
Brookside Park Sept. 27 is their 
largest annual fundraiser. This 
year they have a goal to raise 
$400,000 to help provide shelter, 
food and veterinary care for 
nearly 12,000 animals cared 
for every year at the Pasadena 
Humane Society, including 
dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, reptiles, 
wildlife and more.

 “The walk is our biggest 
fundraiser of the year and so 
much fun for everyone,” said 
Carol Kirby, Chairman of the 
PHS Board of Directors. “It’s 
inspirational to see thousands of 
people and over a thousand dogs 
all gathered together to help the 
animals in our community.”

 Organizers said participants 
who raise or give $1,000 or more 
will receive VIP status this year 
which includes VIP registration, 
access to the VIP tent, food, 
drinks, free giveaways they said.

 Check in starts at 8 a.m., and 
the fun begins with the Walk 
at 9 a.m. Participants and their 
canine companions can walk 
a one-mile or three-mile route 
around the historic Rose Bowl 
and then recharge at the Pet Expo 
featuring pet-related booths, 
food trucks, K-9 demonstrations 
and more until 1 p.m.

 Newly elected Pasadena 
Mayor Terry Tornek will, 
next week, hold the first in 
a series of informal, local 
neighborhood conversations 
spread throughout the city.

 The first event will be in East 
Pasadena from, 7 p.m. to 8:30 
p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the 
Don Benito Fundamental 
School Auditorium, 3700 
Denair Street. 

 Some of the topics to 
be discussed include the 
Albertson’s Shopping Center, 
Hamilton Park, the Sierra 
Madre median and the 
drought, Tornek said he is open 
to wherever the conversation 
may go.

 “I want our citizens to have 
a better connection with city 
government and their local 
elected officials. I want them 
to know we’re listening and 
that their voices are being 
heard,” Tornek said.

Questions need to be

Minimum 
$15 Wage

Museum to Showcase 
Ceramics from East Asia

 Pasadena and a few other 
cities are starting to investigate 
the issue of minimum wages 
now that, the City of Los 
Angeles and the County of Los 
Angeles took steps to initiate 
a new minimum wage, which 
will reach $15 an hour by July 
2020.

 The Council’s Economic 
Development and Technology 
sub-committee will be 
evaluating how this might 
impact Pasadena.

 At the time, the minimum 
wage issue was discussed at a 
July Council meeting, the city 
council assigned the issue to 
Economic Development and 
Technology Committee with 
the intent that a method of 
outreach would be pursued in 
order to hear from different 
stakeholders. 

 Staff will invite business 
representative in the 
restaurant, home-healthcare, 
childcare, retail and other 
impacted sectors to future 
meetings they said. Future 
meeting dates have not been 
set but will be posted they said.

The Linda Vista Associates 
are hosting an Open House on 
Saturday, September 12 at 10:30 
a.m. at the Linda Vista Branch 
Library, 1281 Bryant Street, 
Pasadena.

 The public and in particular 
the Linda Vista community 
is invited to attend and learn 
more about the Associates, who 
are reinvigorating their library 
support group which has a 
long history of fundraising and 
planning fun events to benefit 
the Linda Vista community.

 The Linda Vista Associates 
have supported the Linda Vista 
Branch for over twenty years. 
Each year funds are raised 
and donated for a variety of 
purposes. In the last few years, 
the Associates have purchased 
reading chairs, carpets, shelving 
for audio-visual materials, and 
a wide variety of books. The 
Associates also provide special 
subscription material such as 
Value Line and Architectural 
Digest.

 USC Pacific Asia Museum 
announced Wednesday 
Reshaping Tradition: 
Contemporary Ceramics 
from East Asia, the first 
major international survey of 
contemporary Asian ceramics 
organized by the museum. 
The exhibition presents works 
by internationally recognized 
artists Ai Weiwei (China), Ik-
joong Kang (Korea), Liu Jianhua 
(China), Ah Xian (China), 
Yeesookyung (Korea), Harumi 
Nakashima (Japan) and Bui 
Cong Khanh (Vietnam) to 
consider some of the most 
extraordinary developments 
that are reshaping ceramic 
practice today. The exhibition 
also presents select examples 
of pre-modern ceramics from 
the Museum’s permanent 
collection that reveal the impact 
of traditional ceramics on 
contemporary Asian artists. 
“USC Pacific Asia Museum 
has a long history of presenting 
artists living in Asia and the 
Pacific Islands to Southern 
California audiences,” Museum 
Director Christina Yu Yu, said. 
“Reshaping Tradition continues 
this mission by showcasing the 
continuity and creativity of 
the art and culture from those 
regions.”

 Curated by Yeonsoo Chee, 
USC PAM Assistant Curator, 
Reshaping Tradition includes 
approximately thirty objects 
(twenty-one contemporary 
works and ten pre-modern 
works) all made of ceramic 
with the exception of two 
2-D works. The exhibit runs 
September 11 through January 
31. The museum is located 
46 North Los Robles Avenue.

6:00 PM – Daniel Sandoval, 
31 years old of Altadena, was 
arrested for battery on family 
members in the 2100 block 
of Glenrose Avenue. He was 
additionally charged with 
battery on a paramedic and 
resisting arrest. 

An identity theft report was 
documented from the 3100 
block of Ewing Avenue.

Monday, August 24th

Between 12:00 AM and 9:00 
AM- A vandalism occurred in 
the 100 block of West Ventura 
Street. Unknown suspect(s) 
scratched two separate vehicles 
parked in a driveway.

1:30 PM- A petty theft occurred 
in the 2000 block of Mar Vista 
Avenue. Unknown suspect(s) 
stole clothing and a pair of 
shoes from a parcel left on the 
porch by UPS.

6:30 PM – Jaime Flores, 50 years 
old of Altadena, was arrested 
for carrying a concealed dagger, 
public intoxication, and giving 
false information to a peace 
officer in the area of Woodbury 
Road and Raymond Avenue.

Tuesday, August 25th

9:00 AM – Porfirio Guerrero, 
23 years old of Altadena, was 
arrested in the 2700 block of 
Fair Oaks Avenue for domestic 
violence.

Between August 19th and 
August 25th – A residential 
burglary occurred in the 800 
block of East Calaveras Street. 
Unknown suspect(s) broke 
through the rear slider doors 
and ransacked the house. 
Stolen was a silver MacBook 
Pro laptop and a black 19” 
computer monitor.

4:31 PM – Marc Jones, 31 years 
old of Pasadena, was arrested 
near Montana Street and El 
Sereno Avenue for possession 
of marijuana for sale.

Between 11:59 AM and 7:20 PM 
– A gray 2006 Chrysler 300 was 
stolen from the 1600 block of 
Dominion Avenue. The vehicle 
was recovered the following day 
several blocks from where it 
was stolen.

Wednesday, August 26th

Between 6:00 AM and 4:00 PM 
– A white Ford F250 truck was 
stolen from the 800 block of 
West Altadena Drive. Vehicle 
still outstanding. 

Thursday, August 27th

3:43 AM – Zuri Ordonez, 20 
years old of Altadena, was 
arrested near the 200 block of 
Altadena Drive for being drunk 
in public.

11:07 AM – A petty theft of 
recyclables occurred in the 2000 
block of Raymond Avenue.

9:30 PM – Rodrigo Zaula-Soto, 
23 years old of Altadena, was 
arrested for domestic violence 
in the 200 block of West 
Mountain View Street.

Friday, August 28th

7:55 AM – A petty theft occurred 
in the 2500 block of Washington 
Boulevard. Unknown 
suspect(s) stole the victim’s 
purse containing $200.00, 
a driver’s license, cosmetic 
items, and miscellaneous cards 
after the victim left the purse 
unattended. 

2:00 PM – Patrick Gorse, 60 
years old of Altadena, was 
arrested for making criminal 
threats in the 100 block of 
Marathon Road.

6:00 PM – Stephen Ross, 60 
years old of Altadena, was 
arrested for drinking in public 
near Fair Oaks Avenue and 
Mendocino Street.

8:33 PM – Donald McCall, 
53 years old of Altadena, 
was arrested near Fair Oaks 
Avenue and Calaveras Street for 
being under the influence of a 
controlled substance.

Saturday, August 29th

Between 12:00 AM and 8:50 AM 
– A vehicle burglary occurred 
in the 2600 block of Fair Oaks 
Avenue. Unknown suspect(s) 
broke into the victim’s locked 
truck and stole two DeWalt 
drills and other miscellaneous 
tools.
