IN LOVING MEMORY OF

REVEREND MONSIGNOR ROLAND ZIMMERMAN

NOVEMBER 17, 1926-AUGUST 26, 2015

By Joan Schmidt

Yesterday, we attended the funeral services for our beloved Monsignor Zimmerman, who came to
Annunciation Parish forty years ago. The Church was packed with many parishioners, and former students of
Annunciation School and Bishop Amat High School, whose ENTIRE football team was Honor Guard as well as
the Knights of Columbus in their beautiful attire. It was quite a sight to behold.

The official celebrant was Archbishop Gomez. Concelebrants included Cardinal Mahoney, Bishops O’Connell,
Sartoris and Monsignor Carroll and several Diocesan Clergy including Monsignor Nichols, and Father Duyshart.
(From our Parish) Altar Servers were Joshua Logan, Jeremy Dixon and James Ballard. Pastor Father Herbert
read the gospel and did the homily which included wonderful memories of Monsignor. Father Herbert came
to Annunciation thirty years ago as an Associate under Pastor, Father Zimmerman. Sixteen years ago Father
Herbert returned to Annunciation as Pastor, and Monsignor as Pastor Emeritus, technically under Father Herbert,
a unique situation! Father Herbert spoke of Monsignor Zim, a great pastor, priest, mentor and friend.

Gary Zimmerman gave a wonderful eulogy of his beloved Uncle Roland, sharing stories of family get-togethers
and a “daring” side of Monsignor. Monsignor spent most holidays at
their homes in Palos Verdes and Hawaii. Gary’s late father, Bill, World
War II decorated Marine pilot, who flew on dangerous missions, and
later a Dentist and teacher was hero to his younger brother Roland.

At our Parish, Monsignor had many friends. Gary thanked Mary Pat
Wiard, and said her family was Monsignor’s second family. He spent
many holidays at the Wiard home and raved about Mary Pat’s
culinary skills!

Monsignor was an avid USC fan and parishioner Monica McGuire
loved Notre Dame. She was the only person who could get away with
ribbing him when USC was losing. Monsignor had a USC banner
which was stolen, but Monica purchased a new one and presented it
at his 60th Jubilee of priesthood.

Monsignor Carroll from Bishop Amat gave a wonderful Eulogy
of Monsignor’s integral role at the school as principal and teacher for a few
years before his Annunciation Parish assignment. Monsignor Zim
was Football Chaplain at Amat much to Monsignor Carroll’s relief,
and then Basketball and Baseball Chaplain, surely Bishop Amat’s #1 fan!
Monsignor also loved watching Annunciation sports events, and was
thrilled Annunciation kids chose Bishop Amat High School; he could
cheer for them again! And they all loved him.

If I wrote all the wonderful memories I have of Monsignor, it would be volumes. This man was our Pastor, Spiritual
Advisor and friend. During my twenty-five years teaching, he’d visit the classrooms-much to the children’s delight.
He’d get involved with a lesson, congratulate them on a win the day before, or just pop in to say “hi”. The last year
I taught, he left the room and said, “Hasta La Vista Baby”. The students were shocked and cracked up. He’d say
something outrageous-what a sense of humor!

I need to thank our joint choirs for the fine music and the MANY FINE PEOPLE OF ALL AGES involved in
making Monsignor’s funeral and reception so special. There were hours of planning, making programs, food prep,
set-up, clean-up-you all are BEYOND AWESOME!

Monsignor had many devoted friends who went on Pilgrimages with him; many dinner invites; a faithful
group at his special Saturday 8:30 am Mass; others visited him in his final days. God bless all of you for your
kindness, love and friendship to this fine man. Fight on in Heaven, dear Monsignor!

Saturday, September 19, 8:30 am, Memorial Mass for Monsignor, followed by coffee, donuts and video of his
funeral for all who missed it. Hope to see you then.

SENATE PASSES HOLDEN’S HUMAN RIGHTS
LEGISLATION -
Bill Extends Statute of Limitations on Human Trafficking

Assembly Majority Leader Holden’s bill to
ensure justice for victims of human rights abuses
moved a step closer to reality today. The Senate
voted unanimously in support of Holden’s AB
15 to extend the statute of limitations for human
trafficking and other abuse cases to ten years.
Currently, California has a two-year statute of
limitations, which is often too short to gather
evidence to ensure victims get a fair trial.

“I think it’s important to understand that
victims of human trafficking and other abuses
often suffer mental and physical problems that
prevent them from filing these cases quickly,”
said Assemblymember Holden. ”Because of that,
many of these crimes are never prosecuted and
the horrific abuses continue. Survivors of these
abuses face unique obstacles to bringing their
suit and it often takes many years for them to find
their way out of perilous circumstances.”

Human trafficking – including child sex
trafficking – remains a fast-growing criminal
industry. California has the questionable
distinction of being a top destination for human
traffickers with most cases simply flying under
the radar. This bill will help the victims and their
families find some measure of justice. Today’s
action would bring California law into line with
federal law.

AB 15 has received bipartisan, unanimous
support in both Houses. The bill now goes back to
the Assembly for approval of amendments before
going on to Governor Brown for signature.

SAN GABRIEL VALLEY CHORAL COMPANY
KICKS OFF 21ST SEASON WITH HISTORIC
SAMUEL COLERIDGE-TAYLOR PROJECT SEPT. 15
AT ST. LUKE’S MONROVIA

The San Gabriel Valley Choral Company will
launch its 21st season with an historic presentation,
The Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Project: A Musical
Legacy in Concert. The performance will be held
at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15 - the 140th
anniversary of Coleridge-Taylor’s birth — at St.
Luke’s Episcopal Church of Monrovia, 122 S.
California Ave. Admission is free, with a donation
of $20 suggested.

In his time, African British composer Samuel
Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) was acclaimed as
“the African Mahler.” Because of his incredible
success in a field dominated by white males at
a time when racism in America was peaking,
his influence on African American artists and
intellectuals was powerful and far-reaching.
SGVCC Artistic Director Dr. Zanaida Robles
created The Samuel Coleridge-Taylor Project
to perpetuate the study and performance of the
music of this celebrated composer and others of
African descent. Also featured during the evening
will be works by William Grant Still, Margaret
Bonds, Jester Hairston, Zanaida Robles, Robert
Owens, Joshua Uzoigwe, and Sydney Guillaume.

Owners of timeshare properties can be inundated with offers that buyers are eager to take over their
payments. But often these offers are scams targeting seniors.

Con artists in this scheme require an upfront fee to move forward with the process. They claim the fee
is needed for appraisal, marketing analysis, transfer and/or closing. In some cases the fees supposedly go
toward marketing – and include such wording in a phony contract.

But the truth is the con artists have no buyers and simply walk off with the money you paid.

TIPS:

Never pay upfront fees to anyone promising to sell or rent your timeshare.

List your timeshare for free or minimal payment on reputable websites.

For more information on scams that target seniors, go to the Elder Abuse/Financial Fraud pages of the
