RETIRED TEACHERS TO ENJOY
A “LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE” CHRISTMAS
Judith Helton will bring author
Laura Ingalls Wilder to life when
she portrays the author in a one-
woman program featuring stories
from the “Little House” books.
Wearing a period gingham dress
and poke bonnet, the portrayer
will relate how the Ingalls’ family
weathered the harsh prairie winters
with their homespun Christmas
festivities. Helton
has performed this one-woman
show and others since 1976. She
has also appeared as Abigail Adams
and Beatrix Potter in clubs, schools,
libraries, and museums—all to
wide acclaim.
Judith Helton will present
her “Little House” program to
the California Retired Teachers’
Association #71 (CalRTA) at their
luncheon meeting on Friday,
December 11, at 11:30 a.m. The
meeting takes place at the Senior
Center Building in Arcadia Park
(county park), 405 W. Santa
Anita Ave., Arcadia, next to the
Lawn Bowling Greens. Guests
are welcome to come enjoy the
luncheon and the “Little House”
performance. The cost of the
luncheon for members and guests
is $12. For luncheon reservations,
please call John Gera at (626) 286-
0714 by December 4.
Membership in the California
Retired Teachers’ Association is

well as to current educators, and to
any others interested in joining this
active group. The local CalRTA
#71, San Gabriel Valley Division,
now numbers over 500 members.
CalRTA’s motto is “Your Partner in
Pension Protection.”
Actress Judith Helton will portray
Laura Ingalls Wilder on Dec. 11 at
Retired Teachers’ meeting.
FIRST PHASE OF PASADENA UNIFIED 2016-2017 OPEN ENROLLMENT
BEGINS WITH PRIORITY REGISTRATION FOR SIBLINGS, OTHERS
Pasadena, CA – As Pasadena
Unified School District (PUSD)
families begin to prepare for the
holiday season, it is also time to
start making plans for the next
academic year. PUSD’s annual
Open Enrollment for the 2016-
2017 academic year begins Jan.
12, 2016 with the general online
application process. However,
the priority registration period
is now underway for siblings
of currently-enrolled permit
students, preKindergarten
students entering the dual
language immersion programs,
and current fifth graders who
will continue in the district’s
dual language immersion or
International Baccalaureate
programs. Priority registration
concludes Nov. 20, 2015.
“The schools of the Pasadena
Unified School District are the
first choice in education for
families who value academic
excellence, innovation and
diversity,” said Superintendent
Brian McDonald, Ed.D. “Every
child is guaranteed a place at
their neighborhood school
and Open Enrollment offers
additional opportunities for
families to select academic
programs that fit their children’s
interests.”
To assist families in making
decisions and navigating the
Open Enrollment process, PUSD
and its partners have scheduled
informational sessions this
winter.
The Open Enrollment process
offers families an opportunity
to apply to a school other than
their assigned neighborhood
school in the next academic
year. While every child living
within PUSD boundaries is
guaranteed placement in their
neighborhood school, a different
campus might offer a specialized
program or focus that better
suits the interests and needs of
the individual student. Through
Open Enrollment, families
can apply for dual language
immersion programs in Spanish
and Mandarin, International
Baccalureate, STEM, visual and
performing arts, high school
college and career academies,
and much more.
The online application period
for the first lottery of the 2016-
2017 Open Enrollment is
Jan. 12 through Feb. 2, 2016.
Notifications will be made
by March, with registration
occurring shortly thereafter. A
second lottery and registration
for any remaining spots will take
place in April.
Priority registration is for
siblings of children attending
schools of choice, Willard
Elementary fifth graders, and
Dual Language Immersion
Prekindergarten and fifth grade
students. Registration takes
place at schools, not the district
office, and must be completed
by 12 p.m. Nov. 20, 2015. For
information on registration sites
and required documentation,
visit openenrollment.info For
information about schools,
explore PUSD’s new Find My
School locator.
To assist families in navigating
the process and in completing
online applications, PUSD and
its partners offer the following

THE REEL DEAL:
by Ben Show
SPECTRE REVIEW
‘Skyfall’ was the first Bond movie that I saw but, luckily, it made no references
to previous Bond movies and, from what I heard from fans, it was one of the
better films in the franchise. I had not, and still have not, seen ‘Casino Royale’
or ‘Quantum of Solace’. After this movie, however, I feel like I need to.
James Bond (Daniel Craig) is in pursuit of a mysterious organization at the
center of seemingly unconnected acts of violence around the world; however,
there is one problem: the 007 program has been shut down by C (Andrew
Scott), the new boss of British Intelligence. With everyone in the 007 program
out of a job, Bond must scramble to put the pieces of his past together
to discover the truth behind the sinister organization known as Spectre.
This movie makes a lot of references to the Daniel Craig Bond movies; in
fact, that is pretty much what the entire movie hinges on: the viewers knowledge
of these movies. While not having seen them (only ‘Skyfall’), the movie
was still enjoyable. It is a classic Bond movie with stellar action sequences, an
incredible opening title sequence, and a story and characters that are completely
capture your attention; however, it felt like something was missing. If
‘Spectre’ was a movie that you were interested without having seen any of the
previous Bond films, it will still be a fun and thrilling two and a half hours. If
you are a fan of the series, and have seen the previous Daniel Craig films, you
will get even more out of it, as his story ad Bond comes full circle in this epic
spy thriller.
