Walking Sierra Madre…The Social Side

by Deanne Davis

“Bare limbs shivering

In January’s chilled wind

Deciduous trees.”

Anita Lovelace

We’re sure you’ve noticed these beautifully painted
stones all over town, speaking of the wonders of
Mary’s Market. Big ones, small ones, we happen
upon them in all sorts of places, but this one is our
favorite. See if you can find it. There’s a delightful
happy face one at the Library, too. Beautiful things
show up all around you, if you’re looking for them.

What a great day to be walking Sierra Madre.
Monday was the first day in weeks when walking
outside at about 7 a.m. was a pleasure instead of
a punishment. It was a nice mild 48 when we set
out, my walking buddy and fellow Sierra Madre
admirer, John, and I, and we met all sorts of folks
enjoying the day. The student garden cold frames
at Gooden School are looking really good, veggies
about 3-4” high, ready to grow into something
good to eat. Last I heard, all the food grown in the
garden goes to the Friends Indeed Food Pantry in
Pasadena at Los Robles and Washington.

Peeking in the windows at Mui Spa, we decided
we wanted a Himalayan Salt Stone Massage which
detoxifies and enhances energy, releases stress and
improves circulation using warm Himalayan hand
carved salt crystals; or maybe the V-Face lifting
Therapy, an anti-aging face and neck treatment,
which reduces fine lines and wrinkles on the face,
and improves firmness. Mui is at 31 W. Sierra
Madre Blvd. if you want to check it out.

Moving on, we admired the pansies in the
new flower boxes in front of Thai Sierra Madre
restaurant. Now is supposed to be the best time
to plant pansies, our neighbors, Lisa and Craig
already have some in and they look so colorful.

We were so sorry to see Left Coast Scooter
had moved on but then delighted to see Rafael’s
Interiors, our favorite upholsterer, who has done
wonderful things with the loveseat John inherited
from his parents, a delicate piece covered in a floral
brocade which I am terrified someone is going
to spill red wine on, and our red velour-covered
easy chair, which we bought at a yard sale years
ago for $45.00. Rafael is currently in the shops on
Montecito, but this new location will be terrific
for him. More parking. He has been in Sierra
Madre for over 35 years and if you need a piece of
furniture done, he’s your guy.

The new gardens are City Hall are taking hold
beautifully. Such a well-done project, thanks to
the Sierra Madre Garden Club. Did you know
there’s a Time Capsule dated 1976 there put in by
the Historical Society? Check it out. Poppy Cake
Baking Company had folks waiting in line for a
cup of coffee and something yummy to eat. We
got no closer than the windows as the New Year’s
weight loss resolution reminded us it’s oatmeal, not
croissants, we’ll be breakfasting upon.

The camellias are blooming at the Library. First
we’ve seen this year and they’re gorgeous! Vibrant
pink with zillions of buds ready to bloom. We
wandered through the Friends Library Garden
and noticed that those nice benches in there are
all marked in honor of dear Sierra Madre friends,
like Bruce Crow, Jay Whitcraft & Joy Phillips,
Gwendolyn Ludford, Helen Wagner,

Richard Hartley and, of course, the Mary Tumilty
Endowment Fund. Sitting out there under the trees
and enjoying a restful reading moment will be
lovely when we get a little closer to Spring.

If you happen to find yourself on Montecito in
the vicinity of where Neil, The Pot-Bellied Pig,
used to live before he left us last year, you will find
that there’s a new pig in residence! Rumor has it
this one is a she and possibly she’s expecting. Take
a look!

Nobody has started pruning their roses back
yet, which was a relief as we’ve been so busy
doing Christmas and enjoying the rain and how
much happier all the trees look that we haven’t
even thought about that. Speaking of trees, the
Jacarandas look like they’re seriously planning
a bumper crop of purple blossoms this year.
We hope so anyway as the purple cloud effect
on many of our streets is thrilling. Speaking
of roses, I managed to kill my favorite tree rose
last year. Think I over-pruned. Planning a trip
to Armstrong’s to buy a new bare root tree rose
to replace it. What’s going on in your garden?
Hopefully, with the rain, everything is looking
healthy and happy. Look around this week while
you’re out walking, and see what beautiful things
are going on in Sierra Madre.

Have you got your tickets to “Deathtrap” at the
Playhouse? We do.

Happy New Year, dear Walking Sierra Madre
friends. Hope to see you out and about in 2016.

Valley Municipal Water District is offering a
rebate of up to $100 for the purchase of a rain
barrel. Capturing rain water helps store water
for future use (irrigation, pools, etc.), reduces
demand for water and reduces water/pollutants
in storm drains.

Purchase your rain barrel(s) at any hardware,
home and garden, or online store. You’re eligible
for a rebate of up to $100 per rain barrel and up
to four rebates per household! Click here for more
information.
