Sierra Madre, CA (January 11, 2016) – The Alverno High School Jaguars
(1-1) traveled to face the Sacred Heart of Jesus Comets (1-3) for the first
Horizon League game of the season on Wednesday, January 6. The
pouring rain did not damper the Jaguars’ game plan as thunder-and-
lightning teamwork propelled them to victory.

After several offensive attacks that ended in off-sides calls, the Jaguars’
first goal came at the 20th minute. Junior forward Britni Delgado (11)
dribbled the ball to the left-outside past defenders. Her shot hit the post
and ricocheted directly to co-captain and senior midfielder Isabel Diaz
(9). Diaz, returning from an injury during the game against Hoover
High School, shot it straight into the back of the net to give the Jaguars a
1-0 lead.

At the 32nd minute, freshman forward Megan Cavender’s (7) shot
was deflected by the diving Comets goalkeeper. Senior forward Emma
Cavender (19) put the ball back towards the goal; but the wet ball slipped
out of the goalkeeper’s gloves. Megan Cavender (7) was there to shoot it
back into the goal and give the Jaguars a 2-0 lead going into half-time.

The Jaguars continued their offensive control in the second half. At
the 54th minute, freshman midfielder Beatriz Rivas (16) sent a textbook
cross to the goal for co-captain and senior defender Dina Der Vartanian
(8) to score and extend the lead to 3-0.

Outstanding defense by Der Vartanian, junior Nicole Lianto (6),
sophomore Nicole Oberhammer (17), and freshman Elisia Bendy
(2) and ball control in the middle by junior Larissa Hernandez (21)
and sophomore Subrina Hamdan (4) kept the Comets offense at bay.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ayanna Melin (1) came away with her third shut-
out of the season.

The Jaguars’ next game will be Wednesday, January 13 against the San
Gabriel Mission Pioneers at San Gabriel Mission High School.

About Alverno High School

Alverno High School is an independent, progressive, Catholic high

one hundred percent of the graduating class has earned college
acceptances. Visit www.boscotech.edu for more information.

DID YOU KNOW DUSD STUDENTS STUDY STEM AT CITY OF HOPE

Duarte Unified students have the extraordinary opportunity to
participate in a one-of-a-kind Science Education Partnership with
City of Hope. In addition to high school offerings, the program is
also designed for 2nd, 5th and 8th grade students. The idea being
that repeated contact with City of Hope scientists and visits to the
research facility may help peek their interest in science. The hope is
that by the time students enter high school, they are more interested
in science-related careers and will participate in the summer research
program. Specialized curriculum has been developed for every grade-
level in collaboration with our teachers and City of Hope experts.
2nd graders focus on genetics, 5th graders explore the human body
and 8th grade students utilize forensics to solve a lab mystery. On
a recent Friday, forty 5th grade students from Valley View visited
the City of Hope main campus. They were exposed to four different
hands-on experiments facilitated by real scientists. The 5th graders
participated in lessons about the digestive system, blood typing and
transfusions, how diseases are spread, and protecting the brain. They
were outfitted with real science lab coats and gear that may be too
big for them now, but by the time those lab coats do fit, they will be
ready for majors in the sciences in college and for exciting careers
in S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
fields). For more information about Duarte Unified’s partnership
programs with City of Hope go to http://www.cityofhope.org/

PASADENA UNIFIED HONORS MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. WITH

ART, WRITING, CAMPUS CLEANUPS AND COMMEMORATIONS

THE REVENANT REVIEW

For years, Leonardo DiCaprio has been working extremely
hard to earn an Oscar. Last year, director of ‘The Revenant’, Alejandro
González Iñárritu, won for his film ‘Birdman’. DiCaprio
was probably fast to work with Iñárritu since he will most likely
win multiple Oscars again this year for ‘The Revenant’, which
looks to be better than ‘Birdman’, but does it actually deliver?

Hugh Glass (DiCaprio), joined by a company of men, are on
a fur trading expedition when attacked by Native Americans on
the hunt for their chief’s daughter. With only ten men left, they
must make their way to the nearest outpost, but tensions run
high between a man named Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy) and Glass’
half Native American son, Hawk (Forrest Goodluck). After being
mauled by a bear, having his son killed in front of him, and
being left for dead, Glass must find his way back to civilization
and seek revenge on the man who took everything from him.

‘The Revenant’ is the best movie that I never want to see again.
The acting is stunning, the story flows perfectly from scene to
scene, and the cinematography makes every second of the film
a feast for the eyes. Yet, it is not an easy film to watch. At almost
three hours long, the events that happen in this film are so disgusting,
graphically violent, and heart-wrenchingly sad that, if
it were not for the beautiful cinematography and acting, ‘The
Revenant’ would be an unwatchable film. It is a film that should
not be missed and will certainly be a major awards contender
when Oscar season comes around, and hopefully DiCaprio will
finally get his first, much needed Oscar win.
