3-PEAT!
Sierra Madre Middle School Girls’ Basketball team win 3rd
consecutive Learns League Title, Defeating Marshall 45-44
Pasadena, CA – Stifling defense, a four-point-play, and a surging
comeback leading to a nail-biting finish, capped off the 2016
LEARNS Girls Basketball Championship game held at Pasadena
High School on Wednesday, March 9th.
The Marshall Eagles jumped out to an early 1st half lead, only to
see that lead dwindle as they went into halftime tied at 21 each. The
second half saw the Sierra Madre Hawks jump out to a 10-point
lead with strong guard play, anchored by Kamesha Moore and a
gritty all-round performance by forward Carrie Fleming. Then
it was Marshall’s turn to mount a comeback as they erased the
10-point deficit with two minutes left in the contest. Trading free
throws down the stretch, the Hawks went ahead 45-44 with 5
seconds remaining in the contest, but the Eagles failed to get a
last second shot off. This is the Hawks 3rd consecutive LEARNS
program championship.

in San Gabriel Valley, SMGSA goal is to providing quality athletic
experiences through which our girls develop positive character-
building traits and love for the game. This year’s opening ceremonies
were dedicated to the memory of Chris Nelson, a SMGSA parent that
was struck and killed by a drunk driver on Sunday, February 21st on
his way home from work. Two of Chris’ daughters are players this
season and the opening ceremony moment of silence was especially
touching. (for more information on the Chris’ memorial fund, visit
