Pasadena, CA – Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) Superintendent
Brian McDonald and Board of Education Clerk Larry Torres
will join other PUSD board members, representatives from the
Sierra Madre City Council, Sierra Madre Middle School (SMMS)
students, teachers, parents, and Sierra Madre residents at a ribbon
cutting ceremony and celebration of the new Sierra Madre Middle
School campus Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at 5:30 p.m.

“This occasion allows Sierra Madre Middle School to look back on
its past achievements and at the same time celebrate the completion
of its new buildings for future success,” said Superintendent McDonald.
“The new facilities support the cherished culture of community
and excellence that characterizes Sierra Madre and grooms
future generations of well-rounded and civic-minded youth to become
distinguished leaders in our community.”

The $28 million campus consists of classroom buildings with 20
classrooms, a performing arts center, gymnasium, visual arts labs,
science labs, music rooms, library, administration area, and atrium.
Other features include playfields, classroom technology support,
energy management systems and new furniture.

The celebration will include the dedication of the gymnasium in
honor of retired principal Ty Gaffney, who led Sierra Madre School
from 1998 to 2006.

“I have known Ty Gaffney since my daughter first enrolled at Sierra
Madre Elementary School in 1998,” said Board Member Larry
Torres. “Ty’s professionalism, leadership and vision were fundamental
in transforming both Sierra Madre schools into the jewels
that they have become. I cannot think of a more deserving honor
than to name the new gymnasium at the middle school after him.”

The school’s Open House, including tours of classrooms, follows.

The new campus has the capacity to serve up to 600 students,
including residents living within the SMMS attendance boundary,
middle school students enrolled in district’s Mandarin dual language
immersion program, and other students from across the districts
who apply via PUSD’s open enrollment process.

Construction of the new campus was funded by Measure TT,
the $350 million school bond initiative approved by voters in 2008.
More information on Measure TT can be found at www.measurett.
org.

The project was designed by PBWS Architects and built by Sinanian
Development.

ST. RITA CELEBRATES SACRAMENT

St. Rita School in Sierra Madre celebrates the students who recently
received their First Holy Communion. In early May, the second
grade class at St. Rita and other school-aged parishioners of St. Rita
Church completed their journey towards Eucharist. The religious
education a student receives prepares them for sacraments, and puts
a strong emphasis on Catholic community. St. Rita encourages all
students to live and learn with a Christian attitude. The preparation
for this event is the foundation of the early religious curriculum at
St. Rita.

Throughout the second grade year, the students participate
in several events leading up to First Holy Communion. They
learn about the different parts of Mass and how to become active
participants and not just observers. Students participate in a retreat
with their parents prior to their first Reconciliation and First Holy
Communion. The focus of the retreat is for families to have a
meaningful faith-filled experience within the school community.
Prior to First Holy Communion, the children and their families
attend the Agape breakfast. The students and their parents join
together to make bread and to break bread together. Each step in
the process is tied into a reflection shared between parent and child
through sharing a meal together and spending time in prayer.

Following are the St. Rita School and Religious Education
students we honor this year. Jocelyn Allen,Charles Andrews, Nathan
Boskovich, Jack Bragg, Ben Carrillo-Siemer, Max Carrillo-Siemer,
Shavenau Donaldson, Laurent Flores-Freihube, Jacob Friedman,

2016 SCHOLASTIC ART AND WRITING CONTEST INCLUDING SIX
GOLD KEY AWARDS

Sisters Ariana Saigh and Alexia Saigh won six Gold Keys, three
Silver Keys and five Honorable Mentions in Art, Photography and
Writing in the 2016 Scholastic Art and Writing Contest. Ariana
won an astounding five Gold Key Awards for photography, two
Silver Key Awards for photography and one Honorable Mention for

as well as one for poetry). The Scholastic Art and Writing Contest is
the nation’s oldest and most prestigious educational contest focusing
on literary and visual arts, and it dates back to 1923. Some notable
past winners include: Andy Warhol, Ken Burns, Sylvia Plath, Zac
Posen and Lena Dunham. This year, there were over 320,000 entries

made up of a creative panel of notable professionals. Ariana and
Alexia’s entries were “recognized to be the most outstanding works
submitted among” their peers.

Over the years, Ariana and Alexia have been the sole winners of the
Sweepstake Art Award in the America’s Kids Art Contest numerous
times for their paintings. They have created a line of greeting cards
based on reproductions of their artwork. The full line of their cards
is available at Hoopla (formerly Websters) in Altadena. Ariana
