SECTION B

AROUND SAN GABRIEL VALLEY

GREAT OPENING DAY AT SANTA ANITA

By Joan Schmidt

Some things never change. December 26, the
day after Christmas is the opening day of the
Winter Meet at the Great Race Place. This year,
46, 514 attended. Adults received the beautiful
2017 Calendar with awesome pictures of jockeys
on winning horses and gifts cards; the kids a huge
cuddly horse. (Stuffed toy) Thank you Mathis
Brothers! There was a best-dressed contest, a silent
auction for a painting of Shared Belief and much
more.

The opening race was won by Tyler Baze on
Cioppino Pasadino. Agapito Delgadillo won the
second race on Classic Ruler and was congratulated
by his sweet granddaughter Jacqueline. Rafael
Bejarano seemed to win Race 3, but was moved
down to 4th place; Mario Gutierrez got the win
on So Conflated. Veteran Brice Blanc took the 4th
race on Professor Berns, and Stewart Elliott on
Ruby Trust, the 5th Race.

Riders Joel Rosario and Julian Leparoux traveled
from back East for the day. Rosario won both the
$100,000 San Simeon Stakes on Bettys Bambino
and the $300,000 Malibu Stakes on Mind Your
Biscuits. Longtime racing fans remember Rosario’s
successful career of several years here before
relocating to the East Coast in 2012.

Flavien Prat had two stakes victories; he rode
Constellation in the $300,000 La Brea Stakes
and Conquest Enforcer in the $200,000 Mathis
Brothers Mile. It was great to see Flavien riding;
he had been out for about a month after a Del Mar
spill.

Jockey Edwin Maldonado was due back, but his
horse was scratched. Edwin was seriously injured-a
collapsed lung and several broken ribs and was out
four months. Everyone is looking forward to his
return.

Sacramento, CA – California State Assembly
Speaker Anthony Rendon (AD – 63) appointed
Assemblymember Chris Holden (AD – 41) as chair
of the California State Assembly Committee on
Utilities and Energy.

“I thank Speaker Rendon for appointing me as
Chair of the Utilities and Energy Committee,” said
Holden. “I appreciate his belief in my leadership to
set forward-thinking energy policy for California’s
future.”

The Assembly Committee on Utilities and Energy
primary jurisdictions includes public utilities, the
California Public Utilities Commission, energy
companies, telecommunications and international
trade among others.

“Serving nearly 24 years on the Pasadena City
Council, with responsibility over the city’s Water

foundation and understanding of the utility
industry and the need to be smart and thoughtful
as we plan our energy future,” said Holden.

Earlier this year Assemblymember Holden was
elected by his colleagues to chair the California
Legislative Black Caucus (CLBC).

“I’m extremely proud to serve as chair for the
Black Caucus and together with my colleagues,
I look forward to continuing our efforts to

LAHSA SGV HOMELESS COUNT JAN 24TH-

NEEDS VOLUNTEERS

“ The 2017 San Gabriel Valley Homeless Count is
coming up on the night of Tuesday January 24th
and the Los Angeles Homeless Service Authority
(LAHSA) needs 2,000 volunteers to help in this
effort. All volunteers will participate in the Street
Count, where volunteers will make a visual only
tally of those on the streets from 8pm to about
midnight. All volunteers will be trained through a
video before and on the night of the count and will
receive all the materials they need when they arrive
to their volunteer site. All cities in San Gabriel will
be offering a site, even Altadena, Rowland Heights
and Hacienda Heights will offer community
centers for the count. This will make it easier for
volunteers to volunteer in their city or close to
their city. Volunteers will also receive a shirt and
certificate of appreciation for their help. Volunteers
can sign up on the theycountwillyou website and
be contacted for locations. LAHSA is also looking
for volunteers to help out at volunteer sites on
the night of the count. If there are interested
volunteers, please contact the SPA3/SGV Regional
Coordinator, Daniella Alcedo at dalcedo@lahsa.
org or 213-225-8462.
