South Pasadena Tournament of Roses is the oldest “self built” float in the parade, dating to 1893. The South Pasadena Tournament of Roses is already asking for Design a Float contest for the 2018 Rose Parade. The Parade theme is to celebrate the power of kindness. They ask to keep them to a line drawing (no color) on a standard 8x10 white sheet of paper. All pertinent info can be on the back or on a separate sheet of paper. There is no need to get too detailed in the drawing as they are not chosen on the artists ability to draw, but on the strength of its overall theme. Community Drive to Support U.S. Marine Corps Families Analyses of the Library Strategic Plan Survey Now Available Two great service clubs in South Pasadena, Rotary International and Kiwanis International, come together with the City of South Pasadena, South Pasadena Fire Fighters Assn, and The MOMS Club, to lead a community drive to support U.S. Marine Corps families at Camp Pendleton. The drive will be Feb. 4 9:00 am - 2:00 pm at the South Pasadena Fire Station 817 Mound Ave. There are over 5,000 children under the age of 6 on base at Camp Pendleton. Let’s support our soldier’s families when they are deployed for us. What can you do? The online survey was utilized to collect opinions, suggestions, and thoughts about the Library from the public. The Library’s Strategic Planning Consultant Joe Matthews also conducted a Strategic Planning Community Forum on October 22 in the Community Room. It was attended by about 20 individuals, comprised of members of the public, the Friends of the Library, the Library Board of Trustees, and the Library staff. The Library is very appreciative of all the input from the public from both the Community Forum and the Online Forum. Mr. Matthews has recently published four new easy-to- read documents that offer analyses of the public’s Library Strategic Planning responses: “Analysis of Online Survey— ‘Inspiring Ideas,” “Analysis of the Community-Related Questions,” “Online Survey Appendix, and “Online Survey Related Questions”. The documents can be found under “News” on the homepage of the South Pasadena Library Website and southpasadenaca. gov/library. Landscape and Lighting Maintenance District Update The City of South Pasadena has initiated proceedings regarding the assessment used to maintain City urban forestry and street lights. The assessment has been in place since 1993 and there has not been an increase since 1997 while the cost of maintenance of our aging urban forestry and street lighting has continued to increase. The proposed assessment increase will be exclusively used for the maintenance of our forestry and street lights. A Community Meeting has been scheduled for January 11, at 6:00 pm in the City Council Chambers to review the proposed Landscape and Lighting Assessment District Update. A ballot and notice was mailed to the City of South Pasadena Property owners on December 2, 2016. As a property owner, you are able to vote for (or against) the proposed assessment is clearly indicated on the top of the ballot. This figure represents the maximum amount that may be assessed for the urban forestry and street lighting benefiting your property. The total is based on estimates of operational costs, which includes administrative and other necessary expenses. If you lost your ballot or it did not arrive in the mail the City Clerk’s Office can assist you by providing a replacement ballot. Please contact the City Clerk’s Office at 626-403-7230. The City Council will be considering this matter at a Public Hearing on January 18, 2017 at 7:30 pm in the City Council Chambers located at 1424 Mission Street, South Pasadena, California. San Marino Snow Day is Jan. 14 San Marino 10th Annual Bookmark Design Contest Bring your family for a day of fun in “Snow Marino!” Fifty tons of snow will be delivered at Lacy Park 10 am - 2 pm for sledding, throwing snowballs, and making snowmen. Parents are invited to watch their children play in the snow! Pre-sale Wristbands will be available starting December 12 at the Recreation Department (open Monday-Thursday, 8 am-5 pm) for ages 2 yrs. to adults for $7 each. On the day of the event, wristbands will be $9 each. Children 1 and under are free. Wristband sales are final. The City of San Marino is set to hold its 10th Annual Bookmark Design Contest. There are three Three age categories: 8 and under 9 to 13 and 14 to 18. Each entrant needs to have a library card. Each winner will receive a $100 gift card. Entry forms available in the Children’s area, YA area, Lifelong Learning Center, library entry and Adult Reference Desk. You can enter more than once. Names are hidden from judges. Winning bookmarks will be distributed for 2 months as limited edition bookmarks. Winners notified on January 7, 2017. Winners will be recognized on January 21, 2017. South Pasadena Snow Day The Community Services Department will host the 2nd annual “Snow Day” event. Join us on Saturday, January 21 from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Garfield Park. We will have sled runs, snow play, and a trackless train. Separate sled runs and our Tot Land area will be available for younger children. You can buy a wristband on our website, www. southpasadenaca.gov/ recreation, presale is $10, and $15 at the door. Limited number of wristbands will be available at the door. Children under 1 are FREE, with 1 paid adult. Each wristband is good for 45 minutes of access to snow play and sled runs, there will be four 45 minute sessions. You can select your session on-line.
