 Wood from City trees that have been removed is chipped 
into mulch and recycled. The City uses mulch at City parks 
and landscaped areas and offers mulch to residents through 
the mulch giveaway program.

 Pickup days include February 10 at Victory Park is located 
at 2575 Paloma Street and the mulch program will be located 
at the southern parking lot adjacent to Paloma Street. And 
at February 24 Robinson Park is located at 1081 North Fair 
Oaks Ave and the mulch program will be located in the 
park’s southern parking lot.

 Residents will have access to mulch during park hours 
which are 6 a.m. through 10 p.m. while supplies last. 
Residents should bring shovels, containers, gloves and eye 
protection to collect the mulch

 Athens Services will be providing 10 cubic yards of 
compost at Victory Park on the dates noted below. The 
compost is available after 10 am. 


ALTADENA TOWN COUNCIL MEETINGS

The Altadena Town Council meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 
in the Altadena Community Center located at 730 E. Altadena, Dr. (directly west of 
Altadena Sheriff’s Station). Altadena Town Council meetings are recorded and televised 
during the month on Charter cable channel 56.

Chinese Language 

and Calligraphy Classes

 
Mandarin Chinese 101 for Beginners is scheduled 
Mondays and Wednesdays, Feb. 13 to April 19, from 
11 a.m. to noon. The 10-week course will focus on 
the fundamentals of the spoken and written language, 
including pinyin phonetics (alphabet spelling system), 
tones, components of Chinese characters, basic calligraphy 
strokes, essential grammar, useful words and sentences, 
short essay composition, writing emails in Chinese, doing 
online research on Chinese sites and reading and listening 
to Chinese media.

 The instructor is Dr. Yang Ho-chin, a retired university 
professor with more than 20 years of experience teaching 
Chinese language. Born in Jiangxi Province, Yang was 
raised in China and educated in Taiwan and the U.S. Pacific 
Northwest. 

 The cost of Mandarin Chinese 101 for Beginners is only 
$20 for 20 classes plus a required textbook. The class size is 
limited to 10 students.

 Yang will also teach Chinese Calligraphy for Beginners, 
scheduled Mondays, Feb. 13 to April 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. 
Students will learn how to use Chinese brush pens and 
black ink to create beautiful characters in the artistic 
form. Calligraphy emphasizes motion and is charged with 
dynamic life. It is widely practiced in China and revered in 
the Chinese cultural sphere.

 The cost of Chinese Calligraphy for Beginners is only $20 
for 10 classes plus a required textbook. The class size is 
limited to 10 students.
