April 22, 2017 – Just as PUSD announced another round of budget cuts
that could compromise awarded science, arts and special education at
both Sierra Madre Elementary and Middle Schools, the Annual Fund
Boosters (“AFB”) opened a season of historic benefit events.

Held last Saturday night, this year’s AFB Annual Auction was titled
“Sierra Madre Rocks”. Thanks to an army of volunteer parents, nearly
200 revelers had a blast to the acclaimed 80s band Past Action Heroes,
and they bid generously on products donated by local businesses.

While proceeds exceeded $40K, the most important development
was significant attendance by families from Field Elementary, as well
as honors students and families from Pasadena High School. These
supporters showed not only that they love a well-thrown party, but
also that they are all stakeholders in the success of Sierra Madre
Schools.

AFB Chair Russ Meek related, “I’m a 3rd grade Dad happy to see
a big portion of these moneys pay forward to benefit our Middle
School, keeping it great for when we get there. I hope to extend these
impacts and collaboration to PHS.”

The net proceeds rate from AFB events is also impressive, thanks to
major contributions from Ixora Floral Design, Rusnak Audi, Colette
Café, Jill Franks Design, Sierra Fitness, La Salle High School, and
Wound Care Advantage.

Looking ahead, AFB Secretary Christa Backstrom offered “We
have serious momentum approaching the ABF Golf Tournament on
Tuesday, May 9. It will take a lot more to overcome the budget cuts,
but we have an excellent map for next year and are so grateful that
friends are stepping up with their support.”
