May Meeting of 
Pasadena Daughters of 
the American Revolution

 Quilting has been an American tradition for more than 
265 years. Alice Smith, a member and past regent of the 
Martin Severance Chapter of Daughters of the American 
Revolution and a master quilter, will make a special 
presentation at the next meeting of the chapter Saturday, 
May 6, at 9 a.m. at the Women’s City Club of Pasadena, 160 
N. Oakland Ave.

 Theme is ‘Memories in Thread’ 

 Smith will discuss how to properly care for and preserve 
heirloom quilts as well as newer quilts for future generations 
and will display some of her own quilts, including one that 
features images of Pasadena and her life experiences here.

 A continental breakfast will be available. The cost of 
attending the event is $15 and reservations are required by 
emailing martin.severance.dar@gmail.com.

 Established in 1914 in memory of a veteran of the 
American Revolution, the Martin Severance Chapter 
of DAR is a non-profit, non-political organization that 
supports local libraries and homeless veterans, sponsors 
annual Constitution Week commemorations at Pasadena 
Central Library, an American History essay contest at local 
high schools and much more.

Memorial Day Barbecue at 
Pasadena Senior Center

 Enjoy a Memorial Day barbecue Monday, May 29, from noon to 
2 p.m. at the Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. Holly St.

 The patio will be decorated in red, white and blue in honor 
of our nation’s military heroes of yesterday, today and tomorrow. 
The Great American Swing Band will perform.

 The barbecue lunch will include hamburgers, hot dogs, salad, 
baked beans and ice cream.

 The cost is only $10 for members of the Pasadena Senior Center 
and $12 for non-members of any age. Reservations must be made 
no later than Thursday, May 25, at the Welcome Desk.

ALTADENA TOWN COUNCIL MEETINGS

The Altadena Town Council meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 
in the Altadena Community Center located at 730 E. Altadena, Dr. (directly west of 
Altadena Sheriff’s Station). Altadena Town Council meetings are recorded and televised

Chinese Language and 
Calligraphy Classes

 

 Back by popular demand, 
Chinese Calligraphy and 
Chinese Language will be 
offered again to members of the 
Pasadena Senior Center, 85 E. 
Holly St., Mondays, May 8 to 
July 3, from 1 to 3 p.m.

 They will be combined in one 
course. The first hour will focus 
on speaking and pronunciation 
of Mandarin Chinese; the 
second hour will be spent on 
writing and calligraphy skills.

 The nine-week class will be 
taught by Dr. Yang Ho-chin, 
a retired university professor 
with more than 20 years of 
experience teaching Chinese 
language, culture, history and 
calligraphy. Born in Jiangxi 
Province, Yang was raised in 
China and educated in Taiwan 
and the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

 The cost is only $20 plus a 
required textbook. Class size is 
limited to 10 students. Stop by
