7 EDUCATION & YOUTH Mountain Views-News Saturday, February 4, 2017 SCHOOL DIRECTORY ALVERNO HEIGHTS ACADEMY CELEBRATES 16 AP SCHOLARS Students were recognized at various levels of achievement for this prestigious honor Sierra Madre, CA (January 25, 2017) – A total of 16 students from Alverno Heights Academy have earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college- level Advanced Placement (AP) exams. Last May, 80 Alverno Heights Academy students took the AP exams after completing challenging college-level courses in 12 different subjects that included Chinese Language, English Language and Composition, English Literature and Composition, European History, Human Geography, U.S. History, U.S. Government and Politics, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Biology, Environmental Science, Spanish Language and Culture, and Studio Art. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performances on the AP exams including AP Scholar, AP Scholar with Honor, AP Scholar with Distinction, and National AP Scholar. The Valedictorian for the Class of 2016, Caitlyn Delgadillo, was named a National AP Scholar in recognition of receiving an average score of 4 or higher on at least 8 AP exams taken. Caitlyn is currently attending Stanford University where is majoring in pre-medicine and human biology. Alexis Winstanley, Salutatorian for the Class of 2016, and Isabella Dominguez were recognized as AP Scholars with Distinction for earning an average score of 3.5 or higher on at least five exams. Alexis is attending UCLA where she is majoring in chemistry and astrophysics and Isabella is attending the University of La Verne. The title AP Scholar with Honor was awarded to Amy Aghajanian ’16, Marisa Dragos ’17, Jillian Kislow ’17, Jenny Sun ’16, and Alexxa Vasquez ’16 for receiving a score of 3.25 or higher on four or more exams. Recent alumna Amy Aghajanian is attending Chapman University and majoring in Political Science while Jenny Sun is attending New York University and majoring in mathematics. Alexxa Vasquez, also from the Class of 2016, attends UCLA and has chosen neuroscience as her major. Eight students were recognized as AP Scholars having received a 3 or higher on at least three exams. These students are Alexis Baro ’17, Cynthia Lee ’16, Alicia Lindheimer ’17, Ciara Madigan ’16, Cameron Martinez ’16, Emma Uttley ’16, Emily Yekikian ’16, and Hanaa Zerroug ’17. Recent graduate Cynthia Lee ’16 is attending Newcastle University in the United Kingdom and majoring in medicine while Ciara Madigan ’16 is attending Whittier College and majoring in child development and history. Along with two other AP Scholars, Cameron Martinez ’16 attends UCLA and has chosen political science as her major. Emma Uttley ’16 is an animal science major at UC Davis and Emily Yekikian ’16 attends Santa Clara University and has chosen to study history. “Alverno Heights Academy is incredibly proud of these young women and their academic achievements,” said Julia V. The Jaguars celebrated their Senior Farewell with a 4-0 victory over the Comets and improved their record to 6-1-1 (8- 4-2 overall). The Jaguars dominated the match with 7 shots on goal and a corner kick in the first half and 8 shots on goal and a corner kick in the second half. The Jaguars defense did not allow a single shot on goal and only gave up 1 corner kick. Junior goalkeeper Ayanna Melin (1) recorded her fifth clean slate of the season. After 35 scoreless minutes, sophomore midfielder Megan Cavender (22) passed to sophomore midfielder Beatriz Rivas (16). Rivas’s shot was blocked by the Comets goalkeeper, but junior midfielder Natalie Scigliano (5) was in the penalty box to fire a goal past three defenders at the goal line. The Jaguars led 1-0 at halftime. In the 49th minute, team co- captain senior forward Larissa Hernandez (21) was fouled on a breakaway at the touchline. Junior midfielder/defender Nikki Oberhammer (17) scored on the ensuing free kick. In the 56th minute, Oberhammer dribbled through two Comets defenders, and her shot was bobbled by the Comets goalkeeper. Hernandez was there in front of the net to put in the loose ball for a goal. In the 61st minute, co-captain senior defender Nicole Lianto (6) connected a pass to freshman forward Nancy Alcala (15) for the punctuating goal. The Jaguars will face Ramona Convent on Friday, February 3, 2017, at the Ramona Convent campus. HANDMADE ARTISANS JOIN JACKALOPE PASADENA THIS SPRING APRIL 29TH & 30TH, 2017 Fair Hours: 10am - 5pm Central Park, Pasadena Jackalope Pasadena’s Indie Artisan Fair returns to Old Pasadena’s Central Park on April 29th & 30th, 2017. Applications are now open for this juried event and Jackalope is seeking artisans who specialize in handmade products to apply for the fair. Jackalope is juried by leaders in the local handmade community. Jurying this spring event will be MaryAnne LoVerme - owner of Los Angeles County Store in Silverlake, Huan - owner of Flower Pepper Gallery in Pasadena, and Kay Yee - Metalsmith and Professor Emeritus from Pasadena City College. Jackalope’s jury selects artisans who display a high skill set in their respective fields. Artisans from multiple genres will be selected to show from original fashion and jewelry design, ceramics and paper goods, innovative home decor and housewares, art and photography, artisan-made food, and much more.
