JUST FOR BEST FRIENDS 8 Mountain Views-News Saturday, April 29, 2017 HEALTHY LIFESTYLES Happy Tails by Chris Leclerc WHY DID THE CAT CROSS THE ROAD? Hi-Technology Helps Track Your Cat THE JOY OF YOGA OM It never ceases to amaze me, how innovative and creative some people can be when it comes to finding the best ways to care for their pets. One caring and very curious cat owner in the United Kingdom really went the extra mile to ensure that his four-legged friend was within his watchful eye, when he came up with a tracking device that can be attached to a kitty’s collar to remotely monitor it‘s activities. Father of two resident of Marlborough, Wiltshire in the UK, Dave Evans is a uniquely creative cat- loving inventor who was prompted to come up with a mobile electronic cat mapping device, when his own curiosity caused him to wonder where his cat was wandering when it virtually vanished for days at a time, returning home on each occasion with an ever-growing girth. Evans noticed that his furry feline friend was getting fatter following each long-term trip to who- knew-where for more than a few nights at a time, so he finally decided to apply his knowledge of basic GPS technology to creating an invention that would help him find out why his venturous cat was getting so darn fat. The cat tracking device Evans designed is small and light enough to be attached to a kitty’s collar, and the minute electronics inside allow for remote tracking that can be viewed through Google maps. Apparently, now there is even an app that can be downloaded to your smart phone to help you keep track of your cat while you, yourself are away from home. Imagine that - an app to track your cat! Now, most of us are familiar with the term “cat- nap”, right? But who knew the term “cat-map” could soon become a household term for a well-known means of tracking a kitty’s activities during it‘s nights out on the town? Our funny felines just love to wander about and explore the great outdoors. Most of us want to give them at least a little leeway to roam (although that‘s subject to opinion particularly where we live), but sometimes cats get a bit too curious about what’s up down the road, and they just can’t resist the urge to venture further than they should for their own good. That’s why the concept of Dave Evans’ cat mapping device (along with a few similar products that followed his lead) have become so popular among pet lovers, globally. How does it work? Well, the device is affixed to the cat’s collar and records the various locations to which the little rascal wanders while away, night or day. When the cat returns home, the device is removed from it’s collar and plugged into the computer via a USB port connector. That’s when the owner, being the virtual voyeur that he is, can view all the cat’s curious comings and goings as they are depicted on Google Earth satellite images on- line. Kind of crazy, eh? But who doesn’t want to know where their cat goes when it leaves home to run and roam? What Dave Evans found out about his whimsical wandering feline friend was that it had been visiting lots other homes in the neighborhood on a regular basis, and being fed by his other human fcompanions who lived nearby. Basically that cat was sneaking off to fatten itself up, slowly but surely. How funny is that cat? Evans gave his state-of-the-art cat-tracker the easy-to-remember moniker of “G-Paws”, and says the device has been a hit among numerous other curious & caring cat owners across the globe (CNN, London). If you have a cat that likes to roam causing your curiosity to get over-blown, this remarkable new pet pampering product may just be the tool for you. As residents of an area where we share our space with coyotes and other wildlife predators, it wouldn’t surprise me if this product quickly becomes a new favorite on the list of pet accessories for our furry four-legged friends! Well, at least those who allow their cats to roam, that is. Now, on a side note, speaking of pets roaming, I’d like to shout out a big thank you to the good Samaritan who took the time to return two wandering pups back to their yard on Olive Ave. several months ago. I received a random call from a real nice lady named Vicki this past week, whose dogs had ventured out of the gate, unbeknownst to her. She was out at the time and when she returned home, she found a business card of a pet sitter with a note explaining the dogs had gotten out and were returned to the yard safely. Vicki has been wanting to call and thank the helpful handler but it seems the business card left on her door step has gone missing. After seeing two pet sitter’s ads in this section - one for Lois Longo and one for myself, Vicki called us both to learn that neither of us had been the one who returned her dogs. If you are reading this and you happen to be that good neighbor who returned two wandering pups on Olive Ave several months ago, please contact the Mt. Views News editor and we will put you in touch with Vicki. She really wants to express her appreciation. And frankly, so do I! Keeping an eye out for each others’ pets and lending a helping hand is what Sierra Madre is all about! Keep up the kindness…Love and let live. It is a very special thing to OM in yoga class… OM (AUM) is known as the sound of creation or supreme reality. It is the most sacred mantra and the sound contained in all other sounds. It dates back to ancient Indian philosophy and scriptures called the Vedas. The Vedas are said to be among the oldest known writings in the world. From pure consciousness, creation itself came into matter. When this occurred, the sound of OM arouse. In this way, the whole world is vibration or sound. Mantras have a unique way of working through vibration. When we say aloud (chant) or say silently to ourselves, the vibration itself connects us, gives focus and brings us into alignment with our highest self. OM represents transcendence and peace. Each time we chant, we connect to pure consciousness and all of Divinity. This is not assigned to religion, it is a universal Divine connection through the vibration. Remember there are three sounds to OM: A-U-M, that rise of up the spine all the way as the lips close on M. There is a fourth part to OM which is silence. This part should be observed. Enjoy the sound of OM and keep in mind, each time we chant OM aloud or silently, we encourage those qualities of peace and transcendence to come into our consciousness and our life. He once said, “Don’t just be good, be good for something.” This is one of my favorite quotes because he is emphasizing the action. It is important to think good thoughts, but it is better to do good things. Having kinds thoughts doesn’t move the needle. If we want peace we must, as Father Greg, of Homeboy Industries, says, “be about peace.” How can we be about peace? We must strive to be peaceful in our interactions, including with ourselves. Do you find yourself becoming anxious or upset by the news? We must make conscious decisions about the data we allow to into our awareness. Fasting from traditional news outlets can be difficult, but we don’t need to obsess about it. In the 24-hour news cycle most stories are not truly news but are repeated reports of the same story. We can decide to watch, listen, or read only once daily to control our response to negative or disturbing events. We don’t need to engage in online and or in person discussions of upsetting occurrences. We don’t need to repost these events in our newsfeed. Be About Peace To be a force for peace, we can do something good for someone else each day. We can offer a kind word, donate to a cause we care about, or we can help someone we encounter in our daily life. To be about peace, we must be in action. Let peace be a verb in your life. Lori A.
