“I think that I shall never see,
A poem lovely as a tree.
A Tree whose hungry mouth is prest,
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast.
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray.
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair.
Upon whose bosom snow has lain,
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree.” Joyce
Kilmer

I’m sure you remember the big Ficus tree on
Baldwin just south of the Post Office? The one
that’s now gone? Well, I stopped for a few minutes
the other day as I was leaving the Post Office and
had a moment of melancholy, I guess you’d call
it, visualizing that tree and all its beauty. Arline
Golden and a bunch of other people did their best
in August of 2016 to convince the Public Works
Department not to cut down this tree. As you all
know, that tree had caused the sidewalk to rise up
into a really dangerous situation for anybody who
wanted to walk by it. The tree is gone, the sidewalk
is flat and, by the time you read this, will probably
be beautifully paved. It’s tough to be on both sides
of a question, isn’t it. We all wanted to save the tree,
but we also didn’t want to break an ankle trying to
get past it. We have so many beautiful trees here in
town. Our orange tree has actually made oranges
this year! I don’t know if I’m picking them too early
or what, but they’re not sweet and juicy, they’re
bitter and juicy. Having fed them at all the stated
intervals and doing my best to give them water, I’m
a little disappointed in them. I’m leaving them on
the tree and hoping they will shape up!

“Life is a dance of becoming!”

Don’t you love that! Saw it up in the canyon and
couldn’t resist. Speaking of becoming, was delighted
to see that sad little empty building on the south
side of Creative Arts Group where once one of
Lew Watanabe’s fountains gurgled away is going to

become a tea shop/café sometime in the future. At
least someone has plans and will be going before the
City to discuss it on January 18th. Let’s cross our
fingers that something wonderful will be-coming
there.

Camellias are starting to bloom. The Gooden
School has some beautiful plants along their fence
and mine are blooming, too. I thought I’d killed
them all off, but more water helped considerably.
Duh!

The Friends of the Library is hosting its “Best
Used Books Sale” February 2-3. When our kids
were young, we’d all go down and bring home tons
of books. Thank you, Mary Tumilty for all your
kindness to our children, most especially giving
an adult library card to twelve-year old Leah so
she could read all the Perry Mason mysteries. I,
personally, was thrilled to find a copy of “The Egg &
I” by Betty MacDonald after I lent mine to a friend
who, callously, failed to return it. Take a look! You
might find that treasure you’ve been seeking. It’s
3-7 on 2/2 and 10-2 on 2/3. All proceeds will go to
library services , acquisitions and programs. We’re
all awaiting that survey that will be coming soon to
express our feelings about where the Library really
ought to be.

One last thought: If you were born in January you
are ambitious and powerful. Born leader, stubborn
nature. You always stand out in the crowd. You love
to live the good life. You’re a romantic at heart, a
deep thinker and loyal to friends. You’re ever ready
to learn and try out new things, serious about life.
You like to make others happy. Not too much of an
introvert or too much of an extrovert either. You’re
smart and well dressed. Pretty cool!
