Pasadena Mental Health Day “Roads to Empowerment” Saturday, May 19 • 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Central Library 285 E Walnut St In observance of Mental Health Awareness Month, this event is dedicated to raising awareness about mental illness, decreasing the stigma and increasing knowledge and access to quality mental health services and resources in the community. The event will focus on the significance and benefits of mental and emotional health and practical resources and tools available to empower individuals in coping with and overcoming challenges. Through keynote speakers, presentations and workshops for youth and adults, attendees will gain knowledge on the current mental health issues and challenges faced today. Find empowerment in awareness, learn the importance of addressing mental illness and healthy living and discover different paths of healing or coping, and the benefit it has on young children and families. Resource tables will also be available for attendees to learn more about local mental health services and resources. Separate tracks for youth and adults will be offered. Paul Stein in Concert: Music for Solo Violin Pasadena Chamber Hosts Annual Golf Tournament Support the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce at our annual Spring Golf Tournament. Tee Off at 8am on April 13th at Brookside Golf Club. A morning of fun on the links is followed by hosted cocktail reception and awards ceremony. Join Pasadena Chamber of Commerce members, business and community leaders for the annual Pasadena Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament on Friday, April 13, 2018, at Brookside Golf Club. Shotgun start is at 8am following the putting contest. Registration begins that morning at 7am. On-course drinks, food and more included in the cost to play. Brookside Golf Club is located at 1133 Rosemont Avenue, adjacent to the Rose Bowl, in Pasadena. The tournament is sponsored by the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE, Local 12), Pacific Commerce Bank and Parsons Corporation. Dunkin’ is the breakfast sponsor. Proceeds from the Golf Tournament help fund the Chamber’s student internship, workforce development, business and economic development and member services efforts. The Chamber holds a raffle, sells mulligan packages, hosts putting, longest drive and closest to the pin contests and adds a few special nuances to play, making the tournament fun for everyone. Raffle prizes may include iPad minis, a flat screen TV and items donated by Chamber members including dinner at some of Pasadena’s favorite restaurants, and much more. All golfers get golf, a cart, gifts, on-course snacks and a hosted cocktail reception and awards ceremony. You can sign up as a single, two, three or foursome. Cost for golfers is $200 each or foursomes for $800. The cocktail reception costs $50. Sponsorships are also available. Scott Joplin, Antonin Dvorak and John Williams are among the featured composers in the program to be performed Thursday, April 5 at Crowell Public Library in San Marino. Violinist Paul Stein, a 36 year member of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, will perform solo. The unaccompanied violin demonstrates many colors and melodic contours. Bach specifically wrote some of his most profound music for violin and the richness of his harmonies which will be on display this evening, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Library’s Barth Community Room. Paul Stein will talk about life in an orchestra and his experiences as a music teacher and as a performer of family concerts with Chamber Music Express. He created the Chamber Music Express ensemble in 1985 to introduce classical music to audiences at schools and libraries. He has moderated seminars and lectured at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute and conventions of the Music Teachers Association of California. He has been a featured soloist at the Hollywood Bowl and has worked with Zubin Mehta, Carlo Maria Giulini, Andre Previn, Esa-Pekka Salonen, as well as Gustavo Dudamel. He was principal second violinist with the Colorado Symphony and performed with the Santa Fe Opera orchestra. Born in Dallas, Paul received a Bachelor of Music from Southern Methodist University and Master of Music from Yale University. His hobbies include bridge, bird watching and aquariums, and he lives with his wife in Monrovia. Crowell Public Library is at 1890 Huntington Drive.
