AN EXCITING SATURDAY AT THE GREAT RACE PLACE!

 Last Saturday, Bob and I went to Santa Anita; there were 
two great Stakes races. My favorite Frenchman, Flavien 
Pratt, took the “Santa Anita Stakes” on Queen Blossom; 
in addition he had THREE other wins on Passionate 
Reward, Duranga and Skelton Pass. Joe Talamo won the 
“Californian Stakes” on Dr. Dorr with a SEVEN-AND 
A-HALF LENGTH lead! This beautiful horse is owned by 
Jill Baffert, wife of trainer, Bob. It was surprising that many 
of the favored horses didn’t win. We were happy to see 10 
year old Soi Phet, who unfortunately didn’t win; however 
Kent Desourmeaux was victorious on an Irish-bred horse, 
Oscar Dominquez. Kent wore green and white silks, and 
his black boots with a green stripe around them; when I 
congratulated Kent, he quipped, “It was the matching 
boots”. Kent is truly a nice guy and what a sense of humor!

 Other winners were Joe on Pappou; Drayden Van Dyke, 
Cute Knows Cute; Octavio Vergara Jr., Over Promised ; 
and Geovanni Franco, Fender Bender and Loving Lynda.

 Sunday was a great racing day also. Tyler Baze had a 
“hat trick”-wins on War Heroine, Foxtail and Belvoir Bay; 
Apprentice Franklin Ceballos, Jr. won twice-on Tell Me 
More and Eagle Screams. The other winners were: Santiago 
Gonzalez on Wild Lando, (wishing Santiago “Good Luck” 
as he’s taking his tack to Canterbury Park in Minnesota), 
Edwin Maldonado on Sturdy One, Joe Talamo on Smiling 
Angelo and Kyle Frey on King Cause.

 Among new faces in the Jockey Colony is Apprentice 
Asa Espinosa, Victor’s nephew who hails from Mexico 
City. The other successful apprentice is Venezuelan 
Franklin Ceballos, Jr.. Franklin’s dad was a jockey and Jr. 
began riding at the early age of 5, as a jockey in Pony Races, 
which I never heard of before!

 I met Octavio Vegara Jr.; his father, Octavio Sr., also 
was a jockey, whose career spanned from 1986-2011 with 
a 10,000+ wins career. Junior, a native of Torrance, CA, 
began racing in 2013. 

 The big excitement is this year’s Kentucky Derby; May 5 
is the big day! The Post Time is 3:40 PM back East! Turn to 
NBC at 11:30 am Pacific Time.
