...EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 9 PM PDT

SATURDAY...

...WIND ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM PDT SATURDAY...

* HIGH TEMPERATURES...Record heat likely. Highs in the 90s toaround 100 at high elevation to 
between 103 and 111 in the foothills. Some cooling forecast on Saturday.

* LOW TEMPERATURES...Little relief. Low temperatures in the 70s and 80s in the foothills.

* WINDS...Northerly winds increasing to 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 45 mph by this evening. 
Winds will remain strong until mid morning Saturday.

* IMPACTS FOR HEAT...Increased potential for serious heat-related illnesses, especially for the 
young and elderly, those performing outdoor activities, as well as those without access to air 
conditioning. Increased potential for power outages.

* IMPACTS FOR WINDS...Gusty winds will make driving difficult, especially for high profile ve 
hicles. This includes Highway 33 in Ventura County as well as Interstate 5 in Los Angeles County.

* It will be cooler Sunday but there still may be a need for a heat advisory.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Never, ever, leave people or pets in enclosed vehicles, even for a short period of time. Temperatures 
inside vehicles, even if the windows are partially open, can quickly rise to life-threatening levels.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities 
to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat

stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work the occupational safety and health administration recommends 
scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat 
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency - call 911.

When driving, use extra caution. Be prepared for sudden gusty cross winds.

July 4th is one of the best days ever 
in Sierra Madre. We have so much 
to do, so much to celebrate, so much 
to see. Wanting to try something 
new this year, I invited myself to go 
to the July 3rd Pre-parade party in 
Memorial Park with daughter Leah 
and son-in-law, Chuck. Never having 
visited this event before I found 
myself thinking, “Wow! Have I been 
missing out!” To begin with, there 
was food everywhere and everything 
smelled incredible. The food trucks!

 Palazzolo’s Artisan Gelato & 
Sorbetto; The Gourmet Genie; 
Twohey’s sent their truck up from 
South Pasadena and were cooking burgers, bbq and their legendary sundaes were on tap, too. Slammin’ 
II Sliders was offering Kobe beef sliders, Double onion Kobe sliders, Shrimp Po-Boy sliders. But wait, still 
more trucks! Tainamite with filet mignon. Seriously? Yep. Filet Mignon with garlic noodles and a papaya 
salad.

 The VFW guys were selling all sorts of chips and snacky stuff in addition to their brisket, smoked New 
Orleans style for 15 hours. Needless to say, everyone I saw was either eating something or standing in line 
to get one of these fabulous meals. 

 First thing we did was check out the dunk tank where all sorts of local celebrities were going to allow 
themselves to be immersed in cold water. Rachelle Arizmendi, City Councilmember, was up on the seat 
and looking so cute. A bunch of people tried to hit the round red button to knock her off her perch, but 
it took Tom Sullivan, in his second round of pitching balls to send Rachelle swimming. Chuck tried, our 
Police Chief, Joe Ortiz, couldn’t do it, but Tom Sullivan, dressed in an astonishing red white and blue outfit 
did the job.

 Good friend, Sharon Pevsner, of Mt. Wilson Trail Race fame, was running the dunk tank and quite a 
crowd was there to cheer for both the dunkee and the dunkers. 

 There had to be eight different bounce houses for the kids... this was truly a family event. Folks with 
blankets parked on the lawn with their kids and, of course, the food, were relaxing and enjoying a perfect 
evening. Little kids were everywhere and it just felt good to be part of such a well-planned community 
event.

 Chuck and I checked out the Beer Garden, which was supporting Sierra Madre Little League and he 
was delighted to see that our friends from RT Rogers Brewing Company, down on Montecito right here 
in town, were the ones supplying the beer. He enjoyed a glass of Rogers IPA – which, as you all know, 
stands for India Pale Ale, allegedly invented by the British during their efforts to colonize India. Again and 
again, the beer they sent their troops failed to endure the sea voyage all the way around the cape of Africa. 
Extreme temperatures and no refrigeration didn’t do the beer any good and it kept spoiling. Meanwhile, 
the troops in India were parched and wanted their beer! The answer: More alcohol and more hops! It was 
bitter but it could make the trip. The RT Rogers IPA is smooth, refreshing and hit all the right spots. I had 
Sangria which, I think, made the trip all the way from Trader Joe’s.

 Groovy Lemon Pie was playing in the band shell.. “There’s A Bad Moon Rising...” The confetti egg booth 
was doing a land office business and confetti was everywhere, lending yet more festive feeling. There were 
Trail Race shirts, cups and hats for sale, too. The best part was the happy coming together of friends. Many 
hugs were happening, laughter and smiles galore. You had to be there. I’m really glad I was.

PROPOSITION 218 

WATER RATES INCREASE 

 

The City's water distribution system is comprised of 47.6 miles of pipeline, a large majority of which is 
over 70 years beyond useful life. The increased amount of water main leaks, totaling approximately 600 
in 2016, is directly attributed to the age of the pipes (Bucknam & Associates, 2018). 

 

California Proposition 218 requires that a public agency proposing a new or increased property-related 
fee or charge provide written notice by mail to the owner of each parcel upon which the fee or charge 
will be imposed. This notice was mailed to the address of each parcel number in Sierra Madre as well as 
to the owner’s address of each parcel in Sierra Madre. 

A Public Hearing is set for July 31, 2018 on the matter of a proposed water rate increase. The Hearing 
will be held at 6:30 pm in City Hall Council Chambers at 232 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre, CA
