July and August Monrovia Arcadia Duarte Town
Council Meetings featured outstanding Guest
Speakers.

In July, Supervisor Kathryn Barger shared her
background: growing up and attending schools in
the San Gabriel Valley. Thirty years ago, she and
Senior Field Deputy Debra Mendelsohn worked
as College Interns for Supervisor Antonovich.
Over the years, Barger worked various positions;
the last as his Chief Field Deputy.

Since assuming office, Barger has coauthored
bills supporting Veterans and foster children and
motions to address homelessness including the bill
passed by the CA State Assembly in May amending
the state’s definition of “gravely disabled” and
allowing more state sponsored medical care for
those suffering from mental illness. She also
coauthored the Blue Ribbon Commission on
Public Safety to combat repercussions from AB109
and Propositions 47 and 57.

Barger has provided weekly showers for the
homeless and had reps from various groups
available to assist the homeless. At every Town
Council Meeting, her Senior Deputy Mendelsohn
gives an update on Barger’s activities.

The August Meeting’s Guest Speaker was
Captain Susan Estrem, Commander, Baldwin Park
Highway Patrol . Twenty-five years ago, Estrem
went to Long Beach State, enrolled in liberal
arts studies. But after a career day, she became
interested in the FBI, Long Beach PD and the
CHP; her field of study was now Criminal Justice.
She chose the CHP-more opportunity for career
advancement, and attended their Sacramento
27-week training academy-she stayed at a live-in
dorm-compared it to Boot Camp! In addition to
class work, Estrem learned how to shoot, drive 100
mph, and do an arrest in Spanish.

Her assignments have included West LA and
East LA CHP. After her promotion to Captain,
she was assigned to the Baldwin Park facility. She
is the only female Captain in the CHP Southern
Division.

In addition to patrolling freeways and traffic
in unincorporated areas, the CHP is responsible
for the security of the governor, Presidential
motorcades, protection for appellate and supreme
court judges, and security for state buildings such
as the Capitol. The CHP also has canine dogs for
narcotics and a Major Crime Task force. They had
a Community Help Team-SET for out area: They
are Officers Tony Chen, Sam Garcia and Alfonso
Campos.

Estrem revealed that auto accidents are the #1
killer of teens, ages 15-19. She mentioned a one
day class for teens: Driving safe. Please call (626)
338-1184 for further ino.. Captain Estrem, was
joined by Officers Jimenez and Campos .

At the August meeting, Barger’s Senior Field
Deputy Mendelsohn spoke about LA COUNTY
FAIR DAY, SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 2; it’s theme
is “Get Your Kicks on Route 66”; admission for LA
County residents is $6.60. Food venders will have
one entry that is $6.60 . There will be NO EXTRA

(Los Angeles, Calif.)- The Riboli family of San Antonio
Winery recently collaborated with Make-A-Wish
Greater Los Angeles to grant the wish of 17-year-old
Madelyn, who suffers from a rare, life-threatening
blood disorder. Madelyn and her family, who live
in Long Beach, were given the opportunity to take a
Mediterranean cruise this summer and take Europe
by storm. Madelyn’s mom expressed her heartfelt
appreciation saying, “Thank you to all the wonderful
people involved in making this happen. This truly was
the best thing that has happened to Madelyn!”

“Make-A-Wish would not be able to achieve our
mission without the generous support of donors
like the Riboli Family of San Antonio Winery,” said
Marc Sawyer, Development Director, Make-A-Wish
Greater Los Angeles. “We so appreciate the passion,
warmth and community-spirit that they display with
every aspect of their business.”

The Riboli family made the generous donation in
celebration of Stella Rosa’s 15th birthday. Stella Rosa
was created by the Riboli family 15 years ago to meet
a growing demand by its customers who visited their
101-year-old original location of San Antonio Winery
in Los Angeles. Crafted in Italy, Stella Rosa has grown
to become the leading imported Italian wine in the
country.

Fittingly, Sawyer said Madelyn’s favorite part of the
Mediterranean cruise was Italy. “We are so happy to
hear Madelyn and her family had such a wonderful
and memorable time in Italy,” said Steve Riboli, vice
president of Riboli Family Wines. “We are honored to
partner with such a reputable organization as Make-
A-Wish and look forward to partnering with them
again in the future.”
