QUESTIONS AND
ANSWERS ABOUT
PERSONAL LIABILITY
UMBRELLA INSURANCE

It’s no secret that we live in a litigious society.
And though our right to a fair trial is one of the
hallmarks of American democracy, it has also led
to a lawsuit-crazy culture.

In this atmosphere, you’re at near-constant risk
for costly lawsuits, many times even when you’ve
done nothing wrong. This is especially true if
you have substantial wealth, but even those with
relatively few assets can find themselves in court.

If you’re sued, your traditional homeowner’s
and/or auto insurance will likely offer you
some liability coverage, but those policies only
protect you up to certain limits before they max
out. Given this, you should consider adding an
extra layer of protection by investing in personal
liability umbrella insurance.

What is umbrella insurance?

Umbrella insurance offers a secondary level
of protection against lawsuits above and
beyond what’s covered by your homeowners,
auto, watercraft, and/or other personal
insurance policies. For instance, if someone
is injured in your home, they might sue
you for their medical bills and lost wages.
Once your homeowners insurance maxes out,
the umbrella policy will help pay for the resulting
damages and legal expenses if you lose the case. If
you win, it can help cover your lawyer’s fees.

Who should purchase it?

 Umbrella insurance is particularly important
for those with a high net worth. But seeing that
everyone has the potential to be sued, it’s a good
idea even for those without substantial assets.

Indeed, if you’re sued and lose, the judgment
against you may exceed the value of your current
assets. In such a case, the court can allow
the plaintiff to go after your future earnings,
potentially garnishing your wages for years. To
this end, umbrella insurance not only protects
your current assets, but your future ones as well.

How much coverage do I need?

Most people will be adequately covered with
a $1 million umbrella policy. If you earn more
than $100,00 a year or have more than $1 million
in assets, you may want to invest in additional
coverage.

A good rule of thumb is to buy an
umbrella policy with coverage limits
that are at least equal to your net worth.

How much does umbrella insurance cost?

Umbrella insurance is fairly inexpensive. You
can buy a $1 million umbrella liability policy for
between $150 and $300 per year. An additional
million in coverage will run you about $100, and
roughly $50 for every million beyond that.
Umbrella policies are inexpensive because
they only go into effect after your underlying
homeowners or auto policy is exhausted. In light
of this, most insurers require you to have at least
$250,000 in liability on your auto policy and
$300,000 on your homeowners before they’ll sell
you a $1 million umbrella policy.

How can I purchase umbrella insurance?
You can buy an umbrella policy from the same
insurance company you use for your other
policies. In fact, some companies require you to
purchase all of your policies from them in order
to obtain umbrella coverage.

If your current insurance agent offers umbrella
coverage, you may qualify for a discount for
bundling all your policies. Of course, you can also
purchase a stand-alone umbrella policy, so shop
around for the best rates.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES

YOGIC WISDOM - FALL INTO BALANCE

Happy F A L L Equinox.
Can you feel the change-
over happening? Though
it’s still a bit warm and
dry, the cool weather and
winds will soon come
in to alleviate the heat
aggravation of Summer.
In Ayurveda, the science
of life and the path of
living in alignment with nature says this is VATA
season! Vata is a combination of air + ether which
means cold, dry, rough, light and mobile qualities
are present. We are called to honor this time
of year to maintain an even keel, maintaining
balance of the physical, mental and emotional
planes. Using the wisdom of Ayurveda means
that we bring it into our lives and live it.

First, let’s look at Diet. Remember Food is
Medicine. We take in food as a healing ritual
and know that it’s going to create our body and
shape our mind literally layer by layer, tissue by
tissue, channel by channel. Warm, moist foods
are favored. Eat those cooked root vegetables and
make that Butternut squash soup! Make sure to
include good fats such as ghee, cold pressed oils,
and nuts. Don’t go overboard, but food that is easier
to digest is going to combat the dry conditions
that cause gas & constipation. Use spices such as
cumin, ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, salt,
and some black pepper. Lastly and always, make
the food with love and don’t eat in a rush. Try
taking deep belly breaths before eating to activate
that rest-and-digest response.

Second, let’s look at Lifestyle. One of the biggest
ways to maintain balance is through lifestyle and
self-care. To counter the dry and cool conditions,
think warm and moist and STILLNESS! Here are
a few recommendations:

 1. Moisturize the body through Self- Abhyanga.
This is self-massage with warm oil —ideally,
performed daily. This not only keeps the skin
beautiful and strong, but it serves as an act of
self-love boosting self-esteem and immunity.
Need a specialized oil just right for you? Email
me keely@keelytotten.com. I have some great
recommendations!

 2. Practice relaxation and stillness. Stopping
the rate at which you move slows the mind,
emotions and potential reactions. Want the anti-
aging secret? Relax, meditate and find stillness IN
ADDITION to being active.

 3. SLEEP! As always, make sure to get your
zzz’s. The body and mind need this crucial time to
reset, heal and revitalize.

All of these or just some of these are sure to
bring you ease and steadiness as the winds blow in
Fall. Reach out for more tips: keely@keelytotten.

MOVING FORWARD WITH A DREAM
EVEN WHEN YOU'RE SCARED

Having a dream and taking steps to fulfill it can feel
exhilarating, exciting, and at the same time cause debilitating
fear. It's strange when we endeavor to do something new
there's a part of us that wants to move forward and another
part of us that feels unsafe and scared.

What are the stories that you tell yourself about your past
goals? Are you kind to yourself and tell yourself empowering
stories or are you harsh and unkind? How you handle
mistakes and characterize your past can have a tremendous
impact upon your ability to move forward. One thing for
sure is that shame won't help you. It's important to develop
the ability to bounce back from failure.

According to Dr. Brene Brown, “Shame is the intensely
painful feeling or experience of believing we are flawed and
therefore unworthy of acceptance and belonging. Women
often experience shame when they are entangled in a web
of layered, conflicting and competing social-community
expectations. Shame creates feelings of fear, blame and
disconnect.” Shame is paralyzing and keeps us from making
progress. Look at the stories you tell yourself about the past.
Making a mistake is nothing to
be ashamed of, in fact, you should
always be proud of the effort and
be prepared to learn from the
experience. Look for the clues
that could be the keys to success in
the future. Rarely does anyone do
something perfectly the very first
time. Congratulate yourself for
the effort. Next, evaluate the effort and look for places to
adjust. Consider enlisting assistance, if not for the project
itself, at least to have someone in your corner so that you
don't feel alone in your effort. Find someone that will
be encouraging, positive and empathetic. While shame
isolates and separates. Empathy builds connection, courage,
and compassion.

Don't be the lone ranger in achieving your goals. Build
a support system, remind yourself of past success and hold
your vision of your goal. These are just some small steps you
can take that will yield big results.
