SATURDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2018 AROUND SAN GABRIEL VALLEY FILM CHALLENGES IQ TESTING, LIMITS PLACED ON PEOPLE WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES FOOTHILL UNITY CENTER GOLDEN PLATE AWARDS: GAETANO D’AQUINO, HEART IN HAND HUMANITARIAN AWARD AND THE CARL E. FOOTE AWARD Pasadena, CA—The Frostig Center is proud to host a screening of the new documentary Intelligent Lives, which is shattering stereotypes about what it means to be “intelligent” and opening doors to more inclusive education and employment. The screening will be held at The Frostig Center on Friday, Nov. 2 at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome and admission is free. Intelligent Lives stars three young adults with intellectual disabilities who challenge perceptions of intelligence as they navigate high school, college, and the workforce. Academy Award-winning actor and narrator Chris Cooper contextualizes the lives of these central characters through the emotional story of his son Jesse, as the film unpacks the shameful and ongoing track record of intelligence testing in the U.S. Following the screening, Executive Producer Amy Brenneman will lead a discussion of the film and the issues it raises. “People with intellectual disabilities are the most segregated of all Americans,” said Dan Habib, the producer, director and cinematographer of Intelligent Lives. “Only 17 percent of students with intellectual disabilities are included in regular education. Just 40 percent will graduate from high school. And of the 6.5 million Americans with intellectual disability, barely 15 percent are employed.” Advance registration is required due to limited seating. Please go to www.frostigschool.org to reserve your seat and learn more. The Frostig Center, located at 971 N. Altadena Drive, is a non-profit organization that strives to improve the lives of children with learning differences through research, professional development for teachers, and Frostig School. Frostig also provides services to young adults with learning differences who are transitioning to college and work. Everyone appreciates Foothill Unity Center, serving eleven cities, helping those in crisis attain self-sufficiency by partnering with the community and using its resources wisely, providing vital support services with love and dignity. Many old and new friends attended: From Arcadia: Gary Kovacic, Sho Tay, Peter Amundson, April Verlato, Gene Glasco; Monrovia: Mary Ann Lutz, Tom Adams, Larry Spicer, Becky Shevlin, Alice Atkins, Steve Baker, Dr. Katherine Thorassian, Terrence Williams; Duarte: Jim Kirchner, Lois Gaston, John Fasana, Tzeital Paras-Caraci, Margaret Finlay, Karen Herrera, Gordon Amerson, Ken Bell and Reyna Diaz. Representatives from Senator Portantino, Assemblywoman Blanca Rubio, Supervisor Kathryn Barger; Past Executive Director Joan Whitenach. Mistress of Ceremonies was Channel 7’s Anabel Munoz, an inspiration on her own. The child of Mexican immigrants, she was compelled to become a journalist at any early age-Anabel believes in the power of journalism to inspire, change the world and become a voice for those most in need. The 2018 Award Recipients include: Heart in Hand: Gaetano D’Aquino, Neighbors Helping Neighbors Business Award: Toyota Financial Services, Neighbors Helping Neighbors Non- Profit Organization: Food Forward, Neighbors Helping Neighbors Volunteer Service Award: Villa Esperanza Services and the Carl B. Foote Award: posthumously to Carl Foote. Gaetano D’Aquino’s goal was “To Reach the Impossible Dream”. His role models were Frank Sinatra, his teenage idol; Pope John Paul II, late religious leader, recently canonized; Father Luigi Donanzan, an inspiration to charity; and Luciano Pavarotti, a uniquely talented opera singer. Gaetano realized his dream-he came to America, married the love of his life, Sonia, and has a successful business; but always has kept his deep faith in God (one of the main sources of his strength) and commitment to helping others. He has always loved his family- his parents, wife, and his daughters. Although he lives far from his native country, Italy is in his blood: he is a proud Italian; but at the same time, he loves his adopted country. At the Luncheon, we were given copies of Gaetano’s inspiring biography, donated by the family. His charities are Santa Teresita, Duarte; Cancer Research Center, Milan, Italy, and Villa Scalabrini, Sun Valley, California. Many non-profits such as Foothill Unity Center and Friends of the Duarte Library benefit from Gaetano’s generosity. The late Carl B. Foote was the epitome of volunteerism and service to others. It is only fitting an award in his name was begun this year and he posthumously received the first award. It was accepted by his wife, Claudia. This wonderful Luncheon could not happen without its many sponsors. The main sponsors were Wells Fargo, PARTYWORKS, TJX, CVS and micro JOINING Solutions.
