AROUND SAN GABRIEL VALLEY

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE

“What’s Going On?”

News and Views from Joan Schmidt

Reyna Diaz and the Duarte Kiwanis Club continue
to support folks in need in El Salvador. Recently,
Reyna was able to travel to El Salvador and help
a number of families. This child is four years old
and lives in a small town. She has never slept in
a bed - she’s always been in a hammock. When
asked, the family told Reyna they could really use
a bed. With the help of Duarte Kiwanis, Reyna
was able to buy a twin bed with all the bedding
for them.

In another part of the country, Reyna found
Fusalmo, an organization supporting an
afterschool program to help keep kids out of
gangs. In this case, students are being trained to
work in call centers. Duarte Kiwanis along with
Reyna were able to provide the organization with
headphones, cameras and a 3D Printer.

Finally, 80 food baskets were provided folks in
need - 40 families on a small island where they
earn only $2.00/day each received a basket. The
remainder were shared in support of many who are
invisible in their service to various organizations.
If you are interested in joining Duarte Kiwanis
or being a speaker at a future event, contact Tina
Carey at tinac51@aol.com.

A GREAT SUMMER IN THE SAN GABRIEL VALLEY

Once again, two grandkids, Jennifer age 16 and
Jacob age 10 were here for a few weeks. Bob and I are
Senior Citizens so places like Disneyland and Magic
Mountain were out of the question. Plus the heat has
been awful.

The first request was Santa Monica Beach. We
used the LA County Beach Bus. Bus Fare was $3
each for the kids; $1.50 each for Bob and me. $9 beats
fighting traffic on the Freeway and a $20 parking
fee. We left Pamela Park around 9:30 am; arrived
at 10:40. The kiddos played in the ocean, made
sandcastles and then lunch. We walked the Pier, and
did a few rides; the bus home left at 3pm. The buses
run Wed, Fri, Sat and Labor Day. Visit LAGoBUS.
com for reservations.

Everyone loves music and the kids are no exception.
These summer concerts are OUTSTANDING. Most
cities have them: Monrovia- Sundays, Arcadia-
Thursdays and Duarte-Wednesdays. Visit the cities’
websites for schedules. I must put a shout out for
Supervisor Kathryn Barger. This is the THIRD year
that the city of Monrovia and the MONROVIA
ARCADIA DUARTE TOWN COUNCIL co-
sponsored SATURDAY CONCERTS at STATION
SQUARE, 1601 South Myrtle Ave., Monrovia.
Supervisor Barger provides funding which enables
the Town Council to do this. Coming up: August
11-Cold Duck (Motown Soul), August 18-Kellye
Huff Band (Country) and August 25-Boxcar 7(Jazz).
On July 28, the turnout for THE ANSWER was
phenomenal. EVERYONE had a blast! What variety-
they performed Beatles, Classic Rock, and even a few
country songs-there was line-dancing. The Answer
gave freebies- shirts, glow toys, balls, etc. for the
kids. The show ended with “YMCA”, and Jacob came
home thrilled. Fabulous Time!

On Sunday, July 22, we attended a great Wildlife
Program at the Duarte Historical Museum. Park
Rangers Colleen Mackay and Griselda Espinosa
introduced two owls, a hawk, snakes and more.
Many kids attended and loved the presentation. They
are from Whittier Narrows Nature Center. PLEASE
visit their website. They have bird walks Saturday am
and animal programs on Sunday.

Both Live Oak and Duarte Libraries have so many
wonderful programs for ALL AGES! Please visit
www.colapublib.org. for more info.

Lastly, the local museums, El Monte, Monrovia,
Arcadia and Duarte, have many interesting displays,
wonderful events and programs. Art enthusiasts-you
MUST visit the Norton Simon Museums. The works
displayed are phenomenal and this is from someone
who has been to the Louvre. Have a FANTASTIC
SUMMER!
