 The South Pasadena Arts
Council presents Childhood
101 - Photographs by Kathleen
Laraia McLaughlin and A Day in
the Life - Plein-Air Paintings by
Laurie Hendricks at the SPARC
Gallery at South Pasadena City
Hall.

 In Childhood 101, South
Pasadena-based photographer
and educator Kathleen Laraia
McLaughlin who is known
for her “compassionate and
curious lens,” documents the
playful activities of her two
sons and their friends at their
South Pasadena home, in their
backyard, on the road, and
around town, remembering
her own treasured outdoor
playtime as a child. A Fulbright
Senior Scholars, and recipient
of the, IREX IARO Grant from
the National Endowment for
the Humanities, and a Houston
Center for Photography
Fellowship McLaughlin has
exhibited nationally and
internationally. Her images are

of California Impressionism,
teaches painting classes at her
South Pasadena studio, and has
taught courses and workshops
in Croatia, Greece, Provence,
Tuscany, Normandy, and
the Cotswolds. Interpreting
the natural world in a vivid
chromatic palette, Hendricks
often features California’s varied
landscapes in her work—rolling
foothills, rugged coastline,
brush-covered mountains,
and undulating deserts. Her
paintings, including portraits
and still lives, are collected
nationally and abroad. She is an
artist member of the California
Art Club, the Laguna Plein-
Air Painters, the Oil Painters
of America and the American
Impressionist Society, and
from 2012 to 2018, Hendricks
operated her own gallery in
South Pasadena. A Day in the

The Women’s History Month Display on Dorothy
Cohen showcases a mere sampling of her many
impressive awards

South Pasadena’s storied history, both past
and present, has benefitted greatly from the
monumental contributions of women. Presently,
South Pasadena has two women on its City
Council: Councilmember Diana Mahmud and
Mayor Marina Khubesrian, MD. Previously,
South Pasadena has been led by other female
Mayors: Alva Lee Arnold (1919-2004 and Mayor
from 1983 to 1984), Evelyn Fierro (Mayor in
1992), Dorothy Cohen (1926-2018 and Mayor
from 1996-1997 and 2000-2001), Diana Mahmud
(Mayor from 2013-2014). Dr. Marina Khubesrian
initially served as Mayor for the 2013-2014 term.

Dorothy Cohen won both major statewide
awards for volunteers at the California Library
Association Annual Conference in Pasadena in
2009

Dorothy Cohen, former Mayor of South
Pasadena passed away last year at age 92. Dorothy
had devoted half of her very full life to the City
of South Pasadena, and was especially devoted
to the Library during her last years. Dorothy, a
Co-Founder of the Friends Bookstore served as
its volunteer coordinator for 35 years. On St.
Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2018, a fittingly lively
memorial for Dorothy was convened in the
Library Community Room with a full house of
family, friends, and associates, expressing their
admiration, love, and reflections.

Memorial donations in Dorothy’s honor be
made to the Friends of the South Pasadena Public
Library Dorothy’s family also donated Dorothy’s
personal book collection, to the Friends
Bookstore. The family also donated the dozens
of framed awards and proclamations Dorothy
amassed through the years to the Local History
Archives of the South Pasadena Public Library.
A sampling of the awards are being used for a
“Remembering Dorothy Cohen” display in the
case inside the Library’s main entrance during
March for “Women’s History Month.”

Pasadena Symphony Takes
on Mahler’s Epic 'Titan'

 The Pasadena Symphony
returns to Ambassador
Auditorium tonight with a
program of epic proportions
as Music Director David
Lockington leads an
oversized orchestra for
Mahler’s monumental
“Titan” Symphony No. 1.
Mahler’s First Symphony tops
off a grandiose program with
Mozart’s fantastical Piano
Concerto No. 21 performed
by International Beethoven
Piano competition winner
and Colburn artist Rodolfo
Leone.

 Mahler’s gloriously sonorous
“Titan” Symphony is epic
in all proportions, from
its massive orchestration
to sprawling form and
range of emotion. Scored
for an expanded orchestra,
Lockington thinks “Titan”
will make quite an impact
in the intimate setting of the
Pasadena Symphony’s home
venue. “The Ambassador
Auditorium is a fabulous
space, and one of the things
that’s great about it is its
intimacy. It’s not a huge
auditorium, so you’re very
close to the stage, and
Mahler’s First Symphony
is going to blow the roof
off. To hear Mahler in this
auditorium is going to be a
really special experience.” –
David Lockington

 To learn more about
the music, arrive early for
Insights, a pre-concert
discussion with Music
Director David Lockington
beginning one hour prior
to each performance. Or
grab a bite or a drink in the
Symphony Lounge.

 The Pasadena Symphony
offers matinee and evening
performances at 2:00pm
and 8:00pm at Ambassador
Auditorium, located at
131 South St. John Ave in
Pasadena. Single tickets start
at $35 and are available online
at: pasadenasymphony-pops.
org or by phone at (626) 793-
7172, with a small amount of
tickets available at the venue
box office on the day of each
performance.

Community Input
Requested: Next Year’s
Priority Initiatives

The San Marino budget process for Fiscal Year
2019-2020 is currently underway, and City Council
is considering what special projects – or priority
initiatives – staff should dedicate time and/or financial
resources to (in addition to their standard operating
tasks) next year.

Using the City’s 8 “Critical Success Factors” as a
framework, City Council has identified 21 initiative
ideas to consider further. These 21 options are still in
the idea phase; they are not fully fleshed out plans.
Before making any final decisions and turning them
into fully planned initiatives, City Council is interested
in hearing which initiative ideas community members
think are the most important.

If you have clarifying questions about any of the
potential initiative ideas, please feel free to call us at
(626) 300-0781 or email CityManagerOffice@

CityofSanMarino.org. To take the survey visit:
