SATURDAY, MARCH 2, 2019 AROUND SAN GABRIEL VALLEY LIVE FROM THE OSCARS....AFTER PARTY By Rebecca Wright (Editor's Note: MVNews Reporter Rebecca Wright (left)represented this newspaper at last week's Oscar's event.) Each year, on Hollywood’s biggest weekend, City Summit hosts their annual summit and gala. This tradition began in 2016. Founder and CEO Ryan Long created this company in order to assist startup nonprofits so that entrepreneurs could have the chance to grow, make connections, and enact meaningful change in the world, such as eradicating poverty and ending human trafficking. When asked what his vision was for City Summit 10 years down the road was, Long responded by saying that he hoped to see the company helping more entrepreneurs to use businesses to get their messages across and more unity as a whole. Lynn Rose was the MC and Host for this year’s Gala. She has been attending the City Summit Gala for three years now, though she missed the very first one in 2016. Her goal for the summit was to help nurture and create more relationships, raise money for beneficiaries, and encourage the guests to use their money and talents for good. Rose is well known as a motivational speaker, and so was a smart choice for this year’s MC. One of the highlights of the City Gala is the awarding of the annual Inspiration Award. In past years, people such as Halle Berry, Ashton Kutcher, James Cameron, and Charlize Theron have received this award. This year, that award went to Colin Farrell, the well-known Irish actor from movies such as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Miami Vice, and Total Recall. He has overcome drug and alcohol abuse problems and is also highly involved with organizations such as the Special Olympics and Stand Up!. DEPUTY PROBATION OFFICER RAY ABERNATHY AWARDED 2019 COMMUNITY HERO AWARD BY REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE- SAN GABRIEL VALLEY DUARTE CA, February 27, 2019 - The San Gabriel Valley Regional Chamber of Commerce presented longtime Juvenile Probation Officer, Deputy Raymond Abernathy with its prestigious "Community Hero Award" at its annual awards breakfast on February 21st. Abernathy has worked for the LA County Probation Department for nearly 18 years and has also been an integral part of the Duarte Public Safety Office for the past five years. "It is easier to build strong children, then to repair broken men," said Abernathy as he received his award. Many officials from the City of Duarte were present to congratulate Abernathy on his outstanding achievement and thank him for his dedication and passion towards the community including Mayor Paras-Caracci, In his role as a probation officer, Abernathy has served as a mentor and role model to some of the community's most vulnerable, at-risk students in grades 1st through 8th. His focus is on providing excellent prevention and intervention services in the Duarte Unified School District and adjacent Los Angeles County community areas. Specifically, he serves minors in our community under two, State of California grant funded programs for "Gang Reduction & Intervention" and the City's most recent award, the "Violence Intervention and Prevention" grant. To keep minors out of the probation system and prevent juvenile arrests, Ray carries a heavy caseload and never waivers in his commitment to provide the assistance and guidance that a student and their family may need at different points in life. Abernathy's transferable warmth, trustworthiness and outgoing personality has de-stigmatized what was once seen as a program for "bad kids" and transformed it into a popular, meaningful effort that turns kids' lives around. In fact, Mr. Abernathy has always gone above and beyond what is expected of him in the performance of his assigned duties and consistently focuses on serving as an advocate for minors and their families. The City of Duarte congratulates Deputy Abernathy on his award.
