CANDIDATE EDWARD GARCIA
Website: EdwardGarciaForCityCouncil.com
Email: EdwardGarciaForCouncil@gmail.com
Facebook: Edward T. Garcia for Sierra Madre City Council
I have lived in Sierra Madre for 18 years and have volunteered my
time back to the community whenever possible. My wife Amy and
I are grateful to raise our three children in the same town that four
generations of her family have lived in and cherished.
I am running for city council because I am passionate about serving
my community. I am committed to making Sierra Madre continue
to be a wonderful place to live for families and individuals. I
believe my background in Economics and Finance will be an asset
to the city and, if elected, I will make decisions based on fiscal
responsibility balanced with maintaining the way of life we have
come to enjoy in Sierra Madre.
I have been working as a Forensic Economist for over 15 years
and have been qualified by the courts as an expert in the fields of
Economics, Finance, Statistics, and Valuation. I have testified in
California Superior Court as well as U.S. Federal Court in trial and
deposition nearly 200 times. Also, I am currently a part-time professor
at Cal Poly Pomona and previously taught at Azusa Pacific
University. I have taught a variety of classes in the subjects of both
Finance and Economics.
Some of my community involvement includes:
• Sierra Madre Community Foundation, Current President and Board Member (previous Treasurer and Secretary)
• City of Sierra Madre UUT Oversight Committee, Member, 2015
• City of Sierra Madre Special Revenue Committee, Chair, 2015
• Yes on Measure UUT Committee Chair, 2016
• No on Measure D Committee Chair, 2018
• St. Rita, Cub Scout Pack 110 Cubmaster, Fall 2017 through Spring 2019
• St. Rita, BSA Troop 100, Troop Committee Member and Merit Badge Counselor, 2020 (current)
• Sierra Madre Little League, Managed or Coached the past seven seasons.
Over the past two elections here in town, the residents have overwhelmingly stated that they desire a fully-funded autonomous city. The
current city council and city management has done an excellent job of being a caretaker of the city’s finances and, if elected, I will continue
to guide the city in that direction.
I am officially endorsed by Mayor John Capoccia, Mayor Pro Tem Rachelle Arizmendi, and Council Member and Former Mayor Gene
Goss.
As your councilmember, I will make certain that we have a responsible budget, continue to reduce our pension liability, and maintain
the services our community expects.
I respectfully ask for your vote on November 3rd.
CANDIDATE DAVE LOERA
I have lived in Sierra Madre for 35 years and have always been active in our
community. My contributions to the community have been many.
I am a past president of the Sierra Madre Kiwanis Club.
I was a Reserve Police officer for the City of Sierra Madre for 10 years.
I have been commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3208 in the City
of Sierra Madre.
I have served on the Committee for Congresswoman Judy Chu in the collaboration
between the Veterans Administration Health Care System to establish
a Veteran’s Health Center in the San Gabriel Valley.
I have served on Assemblymember Chris Holden’s Veterans Advisory
Committee.
As a long time, citizen of Sierra Madre, I am very aware of issues that are
important to the community. I believe a council member’s primary responsibility
is to listen to their constituents and act on their concerns.
Whether it is for my Church, Country, Family or Community my top priority
is being of service to others and I look forward to representing our great city.
MOUNTAIN VIEWS NEWS
LOCAL ELECTION COVERAGE
On November 3, 2020 voters across the country will either cast
ballots by mail or physically go to the polls in some have already
dubbed, "the most important election of our lives". That may be
very true especially on the National level. However, the election of
capable individuals locally is equally as important.
In the State of California alone, there are more than a dozen ballot
measures for citizens to vote on. In the city of Sierra Madre
residents will go to the polls and select three people from a field of
eight to sit on our city council, vote on whether or not to elect or
appoint our City Clerk, vote for our City Treasurer and select the
representative to sit on the Pasadena Unified School Board.
The Mountain Views News will do our best to provide our readers
with good, reliable, objective information on all. For the ballot
measures we will provide you with the Pros and Cons of each
measure.
In addition, each week, as we have done in the past, we will profile
the candidates and give each of the candidates the opportunity
to introduce themselves to our readers by answering the following
questions:
1. Why are you running for City Council (or the
PUSD Board)?
2. What are you going to do for Sierra
Madre?
3. How do you plan on accomplishing
your goals?
All candidates are being asked to answer the same questions and
their answers will be published unedited.
The schedule for the candidates responses will be
as follows:
Saturday, September 19, 2020
SM City Council Candidates 2 Year Seat
Saturday, September 26, 2020
SM City Council Candidates 4 Year Seat
Saturday, October 3, 2020 California Ballot
Propositions
In addition to the candidate spotlights, we will
attempt to cover the various forums sponsored
by local organizations.
Our reporting on this election will be as fair and objective as possible.
However, please keep in mind that our columnists are always
free to share their opinions. Their opinions are their opinions and
may or may not reflect the position of the paper.
This is true in all things, not just this election.
Finally, we will also provide for you the calendar of important
dates regarding the election. It is our goal to do whatever we can to
help you make an informed decision on November 3, 2020.

CANDIDATE TRACEY VERHOEVEN
Since I was a child, I knew that I wanted to run for office and be of
service. My father was a fallen peace officer and that installed a sense of
duty in me. My mother said I came out of the womb wanting to make
the world a better place. I remember always fighting injustice whether
it was standing up to a bully for a schoolmate or fighting for a better
system. My mom often likes to tell the story that when I was in Kindergarten,
I led a boycott. I remember that our milk would sit unrefrigerated
for hours before our lunch. It made no sense to me even as a little
kid. Since the teachers wouldn’t do anything about it, I told all of the
other kindergarteners to boycott the milk and bring juice in a thermos
instead. They refrigerated it.
My motto is Preserve and Prosper. One of the reasons I moved to Sierra
Madre was for the small town charm and the feeling of community.
I want it to stay that way. I am a problem solver so I will work with
the Mater Dolorosa Monastery to keep communication open between
the Monastery, the City, and the citizens of Sierra Madre regarding the
development of their property. I appreciate the fiscal responsibility of
the current City Council and will partner with our small businesses to
ensure they prosper.
I am proud to be endorsed by the Foothill Community Democrats,
Debbie Sheridan and Karen Rowinsky of Sierra Madre Community
Services Commission, Kim Clymer-Kissinger of Sierra Madre Energy,
Environment, Natural Resources Commission, Lauren Pressman Co Founder of SMART, and Melissa Taylor, Former Monrovia Mayoral
Candidate. *titles for identification only.
I have always had jobs where I needed to be creative and have good communication skills to get things done. It may be a cliche’ but
communication is the key to everything and that is one of my strengths. Being on City Council is a labor of love for a town and people
who have given my family and I so much. I would be honored to be your next Councilperson.
