A Message From Rev. Sharon Snapp-Kolas,
Sierra Madre United Methodist Church
THE PLAN WAS
TO BE RID OF
THE VIRUS BY
EASTER. EASTER
2020.
Here we are a year later, weary
of masks and social distancing
and stay-at-home orders.
Essential workers continue
to risk their lives, and their
families continue to carrya heavy burden of risk and
sacrifice.
We have endured sickness in
our circles of friends and loved ones. We grieve for the dead and
the dying, with gratitude for those who continue to care for the
sick in their final days.
We have worried over the isolation of the elderly; the mentally ill;
those who struggle with drug, alcohol and other addictions; lonely
children and teenagers; people in situations of abuse – anyone
who might be suffering from hopelessness and despair in this year
of shutdown.
We have watched with concern as businesses have closed for good;
churches, synagogues, mosques, and other religious and non-
profit organizations have struggled to survive; most government
and community leaders, at all levels, have done their best as
COVID-19 challenges take all of us on a dystopian rollercoaster
ride.
Happy Easter.
Of course, I haven’t listed every group affected by the virus, and
all the multitude of ways our world has been affected over the past
year. Has it only been a year? Feels like a lifetime. Feels like
we have always been here and will always be here and will never
escape. Feels like a tomb.
For Christians, Easter morning is all about the empty tomb. “He is
not here,” it says in the Gospel of Mark, chapter 16, verse 6.
Christ is with us when we have reached the end of our strength
and stamina; when we have no more creative resources to give.
When we wonder, will life ever be the same again? Will there ever
be joy, and butterflies, and Easter lilies, and girls in pretty dresses,
and boys in suits and sky-blue bowties? Will there ever be Easter
egg hunts and bunnies and chocolates and baby chicks?
Christ is with us when we wonder, will there ever be an end to
racism, to gun violence, to war, to homelessness and hunger, to
climate change and environmental destruction, to abuse and
suffering of all kinds?
Christ is with us when we are sinking under the weight of guilt or
grief or despair. Or the threat of death.
Easter Sunday arrives. We celebrate, with deep joy, the
Resurrection.
Whatever our faith background or perspective on religion, the joy
this year can be deeper, if we choose to be open to it. The more we
allow ourselves to accept the pain and the loss of this past year, the
more we are able to receive the true joy of Easter 2021. We have
suffered much, as a global community. Still, the tomb is empty.
Hope endures.
Nadia Bolz-Weber, described online as “a public
theologian and author,” says of Easter that,
“…in the Bible [it] may be the greatest story ever told - not a story
about new dresses and flowers and candy and spiffiness, but a
story about flesh and dirt and bodies and confusion. It’s about the
way God never seems to adhere to our expectations.”
“Flesh and dirt and bodies and confusion.” And hope. MayGod be with you in the messiness of it all, as we climb out of the
tomb together. We are not alone. We climb together, helping one
another.
And God – or Hope as you understand it -- is with us.

The Sierra Madre Rose Float Association, de-
spite the challenges faced in 2020, prepares
for the 2022 parade!
The pandemic disrupted all of our lives in many, many ways, includ-
ing the abrupt halt in the cultural activities that we always assumed
would never end. Such was the case with the 2021 Rose Parade. Yet.
despite having to abandon plans to build their next entry, the Sierra
Madre Rose Float Association never gave up hope that things would
be up and running again!
After presenting their 14th award winning float (of the last 14
entries) in January 2020, SMRFA did what they always do. they im-
mediately began working on what they thought would be the 2021
entry.
And then everything changed. Well almost everything. SMRFA
leadership and volunteers, with amazing commitment and deter-
mination, kept going, preparing for the future in a COVID 19 safe
environment.
They kept the faith, worked 3 persons at a time socially distanced in
the Float Barn, and continued to prepare for the next parade which
they knew would eventually happen.
And, they were right. Although the exact format of the 2022 Tour-
nament of Roses Parade is not set in concrete, the event will happen
and our local group will be ready.
The Tournament of Roses Committee recently announced that
"the 2022 Rose Parade will feature elements that were planned for the
2021 parade, including the theme “Dream. Believe. Achieve.” The 2022
Parade Theme will expand beyond the initial focus on education and
will include a celebration of perseverance and strength, science and
scientists, health professionals, first responders and essential workers."
The Sierra Madre Rose Float Association was prepared to finish
building the float originally intended for 2021.
Designed by Jason Redfox, the float (Model Pictured Below), will
participate in the 2022 parade. During the 'down time' in 2020, the
float will have even more animation than originally planned.
As challenging as 2020 was, Kay Sappington, a longtime SMRFA
member says that even working under the health and safety restric-
tions on the float was a "spirit lifter.".
The news is not all good however. President Barb Bevington noted
that because of the the pandemic restric-
tions, there has been very little, if any fun-
draising. Their annual 'Bingo' fundraiser
can't be held and the group is exploring
other means of support.
Dave Karp, a member of the Board of Direc-
tors has been working on two projects that
will bring in some badly needed revenue.
In the very near future, SMRFA is going to
launch an ETSY store where you can pur-
chase handmade Feather Sun Catchers.
Dave has also
been successful in developing a garden at
the YMCA in Sierra Madre where you can
select from any number of plants including
seedlings for vegetables, spices and more.
The plants are free but donations are en-
couraged. There are also other projects in
the works so be on the look out for other
ways of supporting the
group.
The Sierra Madre Rose
Float Association is one
of the few remainingSelf Built Float Associa-
tion and has been doing
so since 1917. You can
help them continue their
journey to the 2022 pa-
rade. Just go to: https://
