SHANNON TAVERA OF ST. RITA SCHOOL NAMED CYO COACH OF THE YEAR 

At the annual Catholic Youth Organization Awards Banquet for the Archdiocese 
of Los Angeles, the St. Rita community received a wonderful surprise. 
Shannon Tavera, Track and Cross Country Coach for St. Rita School 
was named the CYO Coach of the Year. 

Tavera was selected as the Coach of the Year in the 1990 school organization 
for her outstanding seasons in both Cross Country and Track. She is 
the head coach for all six levels of both sports. In Cross Country, between 
the CYO Invitational and CYO Championships, out of over 20 teams, the 
Raiders had a total of 8 top three team finishes. They included four firsts, asecond and three thirds. Then in the CYO Track Championships in the 
7th and 8th grade division both her A Boys and A Girls won Archdiocesan 
titles out of over 40 participating schools. Then in the 5th and 6th grade 
division, her B Girls took second and her B Boys took third. 

Tavera began coaching at St. Rita School during the 2017-2018 school year 
after coaching at a rival school for several years. She made an immediate 
impact winning Archdiocesan track and cross country titles in her first 
two years. Then came COVID. A very talented team was shut down for 
the 2020 track season and the pandemic prevented equally talented track 
and Cross Country teams from competing in the 2020-2021 season as she 
continued conditioning her athletes. The extra work paid huge dividends 
this year. 

St. Rita School also had seven other honorees at the banquet. Jessica Young 
was named All CYO in Volleyball. Chloe Guerra, Grace Adair and Jocelyn 
Allen were All CYO in Basketball. 

Bradley Loiacono and Nicholas Kriebs were All CYO in Football, while 
Aiden Mahoney was All CYO in Track for his record breaking Javelin 
Throw
