Day Bash
The Pasadena Public Health
Department, Pasadena Public
Library and Pasadena Parks,
Recreation and Community
Services Department will
host Pasadena’s 7th annual
National Coming Out Day
Celebration on Tuesday
The event is set to go from 5:30
to 7:30 p.m. in the Pasadena
City Hall Courtyard, 100 N.
Garfield Ave. The annual,
free event is part of the City’s
efforts to celebrate and foster
an inclusive community.
This year’s keynote speaker
will be research biologist and
activist Rochelle Diamond,
chair emeritus of Out to
Innovate (formerly known
as the National Organization
of Gay and Lesbian Scientists
and Technical Professionals,
or NOGLSTP) and director
of the Flow Cytometry/
Cell Sorting Facility at
the California Institute of
Technology (Caltech). Since
1984, she has provided
service to more than 30 on-
campus biology, chemistry
and chemical engineering
division labs as well as 50
research projects per year,
serving as a national expert
on the use of flow cytometry
and cell sorting. Diamond
participates in the Caltech
community on a number of
levels, including membership
on the LGBTQ working group
committee, establishing
the Caltech Mentoring Day
with the Caltech Career
and Development Center,
working career fairs on behalf
of the Caltech Academic
Partnership with MentorNet
and more. She has been
awarded the Lesbians and
Bisexual Women Active in
Community Empowerment
(L.A.C.E.) Award by the Los
Angeles Gay and Lesbian
Center and the Walt Westman
Volunteer of the Year Award
by NOGLSTP.
Moderated by Tyanta
“Tigger” Snow, the
celebration will also feature
Mariachi Arcoiris de Los
Angeles, the first LGBTQ
mariachi band, led by director
Carlos Samaniego. The group
performs its repertoire to
suit the LGBTQ community
while maintaining the
highest level of musicality.

The event will also include
an opening show and
music, speakers from the
LGBTQIA+ community, a
resource fair, prize drawings,
Flu Shots, COVID Boosters,
and Monkey Pox Vaccines.
This event is for all ages and
supports those who have
come out as lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender, queer,
intersex, asexual and those
who identify with a sexual
orientation or gender identity
that is not included within
the LGBTQIA+ acronym
(LGBTQIA+). Pasadena’s
celebration coincides with the
34th anniversary of National
Coming Out Day.
Nearly one in two Americans
knows someone who is gay or
lesbian, and one in 10 knows
someone who is transgender.

Union St. Protected Bike Lane Gets Moving
Pasadena Department
of Transportation officials
announced Friday that major
work along Union Street,
including demolition and
construction of sidewalks, curb
ramps, along with the curb
gutters is expected to begin next
week. The work is part of the
new 1.5 mile protected bicycle
lane project from Hill Ave. to
Arroyo Parkway. The concrete
work will proceed from east to
west, they said.
According to officials, the
Union Street two-way Protected
Bike Lane will be located on
the south side of the street. The
facility will serve the Playhouse
District, the Central District,
and Old Pasadena, and it will
ease connections to Pasadena
City College and Cal Tech. The
Union Street Protected Bike
Lane will connect to other
designated bicycle routes, a new
bicycle boulevard under design
for Holliston Avenue, and the
Metro Gold Line Station at
Memorial Park.
The construction of the
Protected Bike Lane will include:
Removing one travel lane on
Union Street from Hill Avenue
to North Arroyo Parkway;
Upgrading 14 intersections with
new bicycle signal heads in both
directions; Installing protected
left-turn pockets for vehicles
and adding new traffic signals at
the intersections of:
Union Street and Mar Vista
Avenue
Union Street and Michigan
Avenue
Union Street and Chester
Avenue
The Pasadena Chorale
Announce 22/23 Season
The Pasadena Chorale
announced Thursday their
2022-2023 season. The
Chorale will perform four
choral concerts and hold two
benefit events for the season
at various venues in Pasadena.
The Pasadena Chorale will
offer all of its concerts at no
cost to its patrons with its
innovative “Listen First, Then
Give” ticketing. While tickets
are free, donations are strongly
encouraged and can be made at
PasadenaChorale.org.
“We have been working
hard on putting together a full
season of programming for the
Chorale’s 22/23 Season,” said
Jeffrey Bernstein, the Chorale’s
Founding Artistic and Executive
Director. “This season we’re
continuing our post-COVID
revival with four concerts to
move audiences with the beauty
of unified choral singing. We’ll
be performing in great acoustic
spaces, singing gems of the
repertoire by Josquin, Vaughan
Williams and Brahms, and
exploring new music by diverse
and young composers.”
The Pasadena Chorale will
begin its 22/23 season on
Thursday, October 20 at 7 p.m.
with Fall Follies, a cabaret-
style fundraiser at the Tea
Rose Garden in Pasadena.
An important benefit for the
Chorale every year, this is the
first Fall Follies since 2019.
The theme of this year’s Follies
is “A Night of Mystery, Magic
and Romance.” Guests are
encouraged to wear a costume
or mask that evokes the theme
of the night. Tickets are $100
and include a catered menu
featuring wine, light fare, salad
and dessert.
The second benefit for the
Pasadena Chorale will be a
concert celebrating Josquin
Desprez’s greatest hit of 1515,
Pange Lingua Mass, on Sunday,
March 5 at 5 p.m. The pricing
for this event will be announced
at a later date. Proceeds from
both benefit events will help
the Chorale continue to offer
concert and educational
programming at no cost to the
community.

Pasadena Chorale recently
reached its largest size to date,
with 70 singers, from auditions
held in August for its 2022-23
season.
The Pasadena Chorale is
requiring all personnel and
audience members to be fully
vaccinated and boosted against
COVID-19.

The project is expected to
cost over $7 million and be
completed sometime in spring.
Officials said that $5.6 million
towards the cost was awarded
to the city as part of $32 million
given to Los Angeles County to
fix and improve transportation
infrastructure across the state.

Books 'Live'
The South Pasadena
Public Library announced a
partnership with the South
Pasadena Arts Council
(SPARC) to present a new
author talk series focusing
on the arts. The series,
“Coffee Table Books Live”,
kicks off on Wednesday,
October 12 at 7:00 p.m. in
the Library Community
Room with musician
and author Leland Sklar.
Reservations are required

Sklar, an A-list session
bassist who has performed
and recorded with
luminaries like Ray Charles,
James Taylor, Linda
Ronstadt, and Jackson
Browne, will discuss his
book “Everybody Loves
Me” (2020). His talk will be
followed by a short musical
demonstration, a Q&A
with the audience, and a
book signing. Books will be
available for purchase.

The Pasadena Tournament of
Roses announced Monday the
seven members of the 2023
Royal Court. The 28 finalists
were joined by friends, family
and Tournament of Roses
Members during this the time-
honored tradition brings nearly
200 people together to celebrate
this iconic event, complete with
the Pasadena City College
Lancer Band.
Members of the 2023 Royal
Court will serve as ambassadors
of the Tournament of Roses,
the Pasadena community and
the greater Los Angeles area,
and will each receive a $7,500educational scholarship. The
selected young ladies exemplify
character, service and
leadership modeled through
their commitment to family,
school and community.
Applicants from 30 Pasadena
area schools participated in
the interview process, and
volunteer members of the
Tournament of Roses’ Queen
and Court Committee selected
the Royal Court based on
several criteria, including
public speaking ability,

on Tuesday, October 25 on
the front lawn of Tournament
House.
The Rose Queen and Royal
Court are iconic traditions,

Tournament of Roses’
history and continue as a
treasured legacy. Royal Court
members experience countless
benefits; becoming part of
an organization dedicated
to hands-on volunteerism,

back to the local community,
developing public speaking

The 2023 Royal Court will ride
down Colorado Blvd. on the
Royal Court float in the 134th
Rose Parade and attend the
109th Rose Bowl Game, both
on Monday, January 2, 2023.
