2024 Showcase House

of Design Announced

Small Business
Saturday will be held
November 25. to
promote shopping and
dining locally.

 Pasadena Showcase House
for the Arts revealed Thursday
the 2024 Pasadena Showcase
House of Design, one of
the nation’s oldest, largest,
and most successful home
and garden tours. The 59th
Pasadena Showcase House of
Design, Potter Daniels Manor
was built in 1902 as a graceful,
shingle-style structure, but was
magnificently transformed
in 1922 to an English Tudor
Revival Style estate, creating this
resplendent, classic storybook
home and earning it the city
landmark designation.

 Public tours of the Showcase
House will take place April 21 –
May 19, 2024.

“We are so delighted to be
back in Pasadena and to be
able to present such a grand
and notable city landmark as
our 59th Pasadena Showcase
House of Design,” said Suzanne
Hart, President of Pasadena
Showcase House for the Arts.
The 2024 Benefit Chair, Dotty
Ewing, was equally enthused
about this year’s home. “It’s the
quintessential Tudor style home
and it conveys such grandeur
and romance that harken you
back to the days of old England,”
she said. “Our guests will
certainly be awed by this home.”

 Designed by the Postle
Company of Los Angeles,
builders of the Pasadena
Playhouse, the majestic home is
situated behind high iron gates
on over an acre of property. Its
elegant façade and traditional
appearance create a romantic,
old-world feel, transporting
its visitors to another era of
elegance and enchantment.

 Following just four short
months of renovation, over
25,000 guests will tour through
the 30 interior and landscape
design spaces highlighting
cutting-edge trends in high-
style living. Guests can expect
the famous Shops at Showcase,
offering a variety of boutique
and craft merchants, as well
as several on-site restaurants
offering hot meals, grab & go
snacks, as well as beer, wine,
and cocktails. Entertainment
and programming are
planned throughout the event
showcasing local musicians,
docent-led garden tours, special
brunches, and more.

 The Pasadena Showcase
House of Design is the
primary fundraising benefit
for Pasadena Showcase House
for the Arts, an all-volunteer
nonprofit organization. During
the 2022/23 program year,
the organization contributed
$900,000 to 75 nonprofit
organizations supporting music
and arts programs, and since
1948, has contributed more
than $25 million.

 Golden Tickets (valid any
day or time) are now on sale

The City of Pasadena took formal
ownership Tuesday of property,
vacated by Kaiser Permanente
more than 10 years ago, located
at the southeast corner of Lake
Avenue and Villa Street – the
deal was done in partnership
with LA County.

 Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo
reiterated his vision for the
future of the 2.5 acre property
to provide affordable housing
and health care services within a
community-focused mixed-use
Transit Oriented Development.
“This project, in partnership
with Los Angeles County, is an
opportunity to bring much-
needed health care and mental
health care services to our
residents at one location. It also
is an opportunity to develop
quality affordable housing and
improve the overall economic
vitality of this part of our city.”
Gordo said. “Now that the
city has taken ownership of
the property, the hard work
of developing the site begins.
Knowing that LA County is
in true partnership with us to
address critical community
needs and improve the quality
of life for our residents makes
all the difference. This type of
partnership is precisely how
government at all levels should
work.”

 Supervisor Kathryn Barger said
she was thrilled that they have
reached the finish line and closed
the deal. “Forging partnerships
sounds like an easy task, but
it takes a lot of work to get the
details right so that all parties are
satisfied. Ultimately, our North
Star was improving the quality of
life of north Pasadena residents
by anchoring a variety of health,
housing, and support programs
in a property with much
potential. I’m a proud partner
in this revitalization effort and
look forward to breaking ground
soon.”

 Michelle Gaskill-Hames,
president of Kaiser Foundation
Health Plan and Hospitals of
Southern California and Hawaii
said “today, we celebrate the final
real estate transfer of the 2.5-acre
site from Kaiser Permanente
to the City of Pasadena. This
collaborative effort enables the
City of Pasadena and the County
of Los Angeles to revitalize this
property, with a strong emphasis
on improving mental health
accessibility and affordable
housing. We look forward to
witnessing the positive impact
of this partnership, which will
undeniably transform our
community for the better.”

 City Manager Miguel Márquez
expressed his gratitude and
support for the ongoing city
and county collaboration. He
indicated that a Request for
Proposals for the development
of the site should be released in
about 90 days.

Zhen-Gang Wang, Caltech’s
Dick and Barbara Dickinson
Professor of Chemical
Engineering and executive
officer for chemical engineering,
has been selected to receive the
2024 Polymer Physics Prize
by the American Physical
Society (APS). According to the
society, the prize “recognizes
outstanding accomplishment
and excellence of contributions
in polymer physics research.”
The APS Polymer Physics
Prize is considered the most
prestigious international prize
in polymer physics research.

 Wang’s work seeks to explain
the behaviors and properties of
long-chain molecules based on
their atomic constitutions and
interactions using the method
of statistical mechanics by a
combination of theoretical and
computational techniques.

 “I feel incredibly honored
and humbled to receive
this prize,” Wang says. “It is
heartwarming to have the
support and appreciation from
the community.”

 Wang joined the Caltech faculty
after earning his bachelor’s
degree in chemistry from Peking
(Beijing) University and his PhD
in chemistry from the University
of Chicago.

Wang is a fellow of the
American Physical Society
and has received many other
awards and honors, including
the Camille Dreyfus Teacher–
Scholar Award (1995), the Alfred
P. Sloan Award (1996), the
Braskem Award for Excellence
in Materials Engineering and
Science from the American
Institute of Chemical Engineers
(AIChE) (2018), and the AIChE
Alpha Chi Sigma Award (2023).
In 2008, Caltech awarded Wang
with its highest teaching honor,
the Richard P. Feynman Prize
for Excellence in Teaching.

 “Zhen-Gang is a world-class
scholar and teacher,” says Dennis
Dougherty, the George Grant
Hoag Professor of Chemistry
and Norman Davidson
Leadership Chair of the Division
