HUDDLE UP
With HARVEY HYDE
January 1, 2024. The weather was perfect. The atmosphere was sparkling, and two of the nation’s top teams
were in the Rose Bowl. How could it be any better than that? For fans, players, coaches and the sports world
to be a part of this college competition was (perhaps now we realize) once in a lifetime.
Build up for the game was unbelievable. The BIG 10. The SEC. Jim Harbaugh and Nick Saban.
Michigan- Big Ten champs, and Alabama – South Eastern Conference champs, and an official 96,000 fans
in the Rose Bowl.
Pre-game activities: Disneyland; Lawry’s prime rib dinners and other gatherings the teams and fans enjoyed. How about the parade? Always special
throughout the world. Bands, marching squads, cheerleaders, State representatives and the January first weather in Southern California. Blue skies, a dusting
of snow in the mountains, no rain. The always moving flyover. A special day all around. By the way, congratulations to Sierra Madre and the float committee
for another great award!
For the real football fan, we may have witnessed two of the greatest coaches ever in this Rose Bowl game. Both may be moving on. Harbaugh to the NFL,
and Saban to the couch. Both coaches make over 12 million per year. I wouldn’t want to replace them.
I’m pretty sure the two best teams in the country played that day in the Rose Bowl. Two hard-nosed teams with tradition and class. Old fashioned football. Run the ball. Play great defense
and play like a gladiator. No ‘softies.’ Live by the pass. Die by the pass. Michigan proved that running the football and playing great defense wins championships. And that game seemed
more like a “championship game” than the one later. Congratulations to Washington!! They got the PAC 12 to the final game. But Michigan was just too much and too ready.
It is disappointing that the winning teams in the semi final playoff didn’t really get a chance to celebrate a great win… Texas/Washington – Michigan/Alabama. The winners barely had
time to rest or recover. To realize what a great season they had had. To enjoy their Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl victories. They played the championship game just 7 days after winning the
semi final game. Two days of travel. Home, then back on the road to Houston. 6 days rest? No way the body can mend and recover from that major effort or the previous game. Either
physically or mentally. And realistically there was no real “rest.” Win a great game and prepare for the next with one loser and one winner. And as always, in spite of their fantastic seasons,
the losing team has that last memory of a loss.
For the Big National Championship, the game should have been played on Saturday, January 14th. College football is on SATURDAY… NOT MONDAY. This would have given them
(remember college kids) a 10 day recovery period. Was this date just to keep the television schedule on track for a Monday?
Just for your information, the best teams were on view for the playoffs.
My final Poll: The TOP Five College teams
Michigan: 15 - 0 BIG 10
Georgia: 14-1 SEC
Alabama: 13-2 SEC
Washington: 14-1 PAC 12
Texas: !2-2 BIG 12
Next year, the Rose Bowl hosts the quarter final game on Wednesday, January 1, 2025. There will probably only be two days of
events and activities in Pasadena, and the winner will be moving on. It seems a waste of all the hoopla and events included in the
Yearly Rose Bowl game and Parade. It’s my opinion that the 2025 National Championship Game should return in three weeks to
the Rose Bowl… a great college football venue.
We are getting ready for a lot of changes in football. I hope they don’t ruin the wonderful traditions!
