BOYS & GIRLS
CLUB OF
PASADENA
ANNOUNCES ITS
YOUTH OF THE
YEAR
Pasadena High School
Sophomore represents
Pasadena at Regional
Competition
Pasadena High School
Sophomore Jocelyn Rodriguez
has been selected as Boys &
Girls Club of Pasadena’s Youth
of the Year. Miss Rodriguez
was selected as Youth of
the Year after an extensive
application process, including
submission of multiple essays
and delivery of a 3-minute
speech to a panel of judges.
The Youth of the Year program
is the Boys & Girls Clubs of
America’s premiere leadership
program and focuses on Club
involvement, community
service, and personal growth.
Miss Rodriguez was selected
based on her development as a leader and role model among younger Club members with
her positivity and confidence, and her participation in a number of Club programs over
the past eight years. Her active Club participation includes serving as a cabinet member of
the Keystone Club, a nationally chartered Boys & Girls Club leadership and service club;
competing on the Club’s swim and volleyball teams; and creating unique photography and
artwork through the Club’s Image Makers and CREATES programs. She has also served as
an ambassador of the Club at numerous Club events over the years.
BGCP’s Youth of the Year preparation and selection process is also an annual opportunity
for BGCP Board members to become deeper involved in the Club’s youth programs. Miss
Rodriguez was supported throughout the essay-writing and interview process by BGCP
Board member Christina Altmayer of Health Management Associates, Inc. Additionally,
BGCP Board member Jeff Scofield hosted the final Youth of the Year interview panel at his
offices at RBC Wealth Management on South Lake Avenue.
BGCP’s 2024 Youth of the Year judges included BGCP Board Members:
Barry Pyle, Board Chair, Elbar Investments; Melina Montoya, Vice Chair, Philanthropist;
Morgan Chong Kim, Nonprofit Executive; Tori McCullough, Walt Disney Imagineering
(Ret.); Jeffrey Scofield, RBC Wealth Management; and Simon Waters, Suitcase Entertainment.
Miss Rodriguez also represented Pasadena at a county-wide Youth of the Year event in
March, where she competed against other Los Angeles County Boys & Girls Clubs’ Youth
of the Year finalists. “The Club is so proud to have Jocelyn represent us as our 2024 Youth
of the Year. She is a shining example of the many ways that members benefit from the Club
– from sports teams, to leadership development opportunities, to arts programming, to
participating in our virtual homework help sessions during the pandemic lockdowns, and
more. She is a role model for younger Club kids about trying new things, staying positive,
and being a leader. That’s what the Youth of the Year competition is all about!” remarked
Lisa Cavelier, BGCP’s CEO.
About Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena
Since 1937, the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena has enriched the
lives of young people in our community, enabling them to reach
their full potential as productive, caring, healthy, and responsible
citizens. Serving more than 2,000 youth, ages 5 – 18 annually, BGCP
focuses on Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyle, and Good Character
and Leadership. The Club experience fills the gap between school
and home – year-round – providing a welcoming, safe and positive
environment in which kids and teens have fun, participate in life-
changing programs, make friends and find encouragement with caring adults. The Club operates two
main Clubhouse locations in Pasadena: Slavik Branch on E. Del Mar Blvd., and Mackenzie-Scott Branch
on N. Fair Oaks Avenue; and two school-site Clubhouses on the Odyssey Charter Schools campuses in
Pasadena and Altadena. www.bgcpasadena.org
