SIERRA MADRE POLICE APPREHENDE HIT AND RUN CYCLIST The Sierra Madre Police Department (SMPD) has apprehended a suspect in connection with a hit-and-run incident on February 3, 2024. The incident unfolded at approximately 10:03 am on N. Baldwin Avenue near Montecito Avenue, involving a collision between bicyclists and pedestrians. The collision inflicted significant injuries upon the pedestrian, and the bicyclist fled the scene. The Sierra Madre Fire Department transported the injured pedestrian to a local hospital. In the aftermath of the incident, the SMPD Detective Bureau conducted an exhaustive investigation, culminating in identifying a suspect. The individual in question has been identified as 49-year-old John Gabriel, a resident of the City of Los Angeles. On April 6, 2024, SMPD Detectives, in collaboration with patrol personnel, executed a search and arrest warrant at Gabriel’s residence and storage unit in the City of Los Angeles. Pertinent evidence related to the hit-and-run incident was gathered during the operation. Consequently, John Gabriel was taken into custody and booked for 20001(a) CVC – Hit and Run resulting in serious injury, a felony offense. Gabriel is currently at the Pasadena Police Department jail, awaiting further legal proceedings. Formal charges are pending review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. The victim of the incident is still recovering from her injuries. The Sierra Madre Police Department remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all community members and will continue to diligently investigate incidents of this nature. The SMPD urges individuals possessing information relevant to this collision or who may have witnessed the incident to step forward and contact Detective Nelson Ascano at (626) 355-1414 during business hours. MARY CARNEY CHOSEN AS THE 2024 SIERRA MADRE OLDER AMERICAN OF THE YEAR SMPD ASSIST FEDERAL AGENTS IN ARREST OF A SUSPECT AND SERVICE OF A SEARCH WARRANT According to SMPD Captain Henry Amos, on Tuesday, April 9th, the Department of Homeland Security Investigations contacted SMPD to assist with the service of an arrest warrant and a search warrant at a home on E. Laurel Avenue in Sierra Madre. Two SMPD officers accompanied the HSI Agents and the federal agency made an arrest and searched the premises. The identity of the suspect has not yet been released. According to the HSI public information officer Richardson, the case stems around criminal activity in Ventura. Request for assistance from the local police department is standard procedure for all federal agencies. At press time, no additional information was available. MVNews The Senior Community Commission, City of Sierra Madre at their last meeting, reviewed the nominations for the city's 2024 Older American The Commission reviewed all nominations recieved and selected Mary Carney as the 2024 Older American nominee. In addition to being a Sierra Madre resident, the person must have demonstrated outstanding community service and be at least the age of, or older than 60. Carney,a long-time resident has dedicated herself to the betterment of the community through her volunteerism. She is an active member of the Sierra Madre Woman’s Club. She has also volunteered with Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which works to educate our citizens about disaster preparedness and teach methods for fire safety, team organization, and disaster medical preparedness. She is also very involved with The Sierra Madre Emergency Communications Team, a group of federally- licensed amateur radio operators who provide communication services to the city in times of emergency and for the Mt Wilson Trail Race, 4th of July Parade, Wistaria Festival, and the Halloween Happenings.. Additionally, Mary is a volunteer with the Sierra Madre Police Department. In her assignments, she provides support to the Police Department by covering traffic posts, community events, informational department booths, and data entry in the Records Division.
