WALKING SIERRA MADRE - The Social Side
by Deanne Davis
6-Day Forecast Sierra Madre, Ca.
Advice from a
butterfly: Let your
true colors show, Take
yourself lightly, Look
for the sweetness in
life, Take time to smell
the flowers, Catch a
breeze, Treat yourself
like a Monarch!
Nice, right? My
daughter, Leah,
the Sierra Madre
butterfly wrangler,
released several
Monarchs into the
wild this past week
and is battling a
truly horrid menace
called, “T-Fly.”
Brace yourself, it
really is horrible:
“The Tachinid Fly
is a very small but
deadly predator to
the Monarch. This disgusting fly lays its eggs in the caterpillar or on the egg. The poor Monarch doesn’t even know it
has been parasitized and goes through its life stages, happy as can be, until these stringy things start to come out of the
chrysalis!” The next step: Squash it! Smash it!
The life of a butterfly wrangler is fraught with disappointment, peril, and an occasional success, when one of these
beauties is released to begin its journey to Mexico.
Today, as I write Walking Sierra Madre, is granddaughter Emily’s, 14th birthday. She is having several of her friends over
to devour pizza and spend the night. This celebration is right on the heels of the baby shower we hosted lasted Saturday
for granddaughter, Nicole, her husband, and a whole lot of really charming young people. I think at least three of the
young ladies were also expecting.
That’s the picture today, Nicole, husband, Chris, and lots of family. These people are all over 6’ tall and I felt like a
midget walking through a forest of giants! Emily is in the picture, too, with her curly hair. Yes, friends and neighbors, I
love sharing family with you and my favorite things in the Mountain Views News always involve families. I was terribly
torn about what picture to use as I also have one of the amazing, totally awesome, Harry Shahoian, Elvis impersonator
extraordinaire, who will pack out the park tomorrow night from 6-8. Come early or you won’t get even a tiny spot to put
your chair. As Harry’s picture was on the front page of last week’s News, I went with my family.
Another exciting week, President Biden declined the nomination and in a rare celestial coincidence, July’s full moon (the
Buck Moon) shared the spotlight with the 55th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on July 16th.
“One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
The immortal words of Neil Armstrong. There was a lot of coverage about Apollo 11 taking us all to the moon, but you
might not know what the Apollo 11 guys left behind: Lots of footprints! Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s footprints are
still there today because there is no weather on the lunar surface.
Also left behind, messages of hope, peace and goodwill from leaders in 73 countries, with words inscribed microscopically
on the edge of a silicon disc. It says, “From Planet Earth, July 1969” and lists the names of the members of Congress who
signed legislation making Apollo 11 possible and the names of top NASA officials. This disc is about the size of a half
dollar coin!
They left a patch from the Apollo 1 mission to honor Gus Grissom, Edward White and Roger Chafee, the astronauts who
lost their lives when a fire swept through the Apollo 1 command module during a training exercise at Kennedy Space
Center on January 27, 1967. They also left medals honoring Russian cosmonauts Vladimir Komarov and Yuri Gagarin.
An American flag was left behind, not so much to “claim” the moon, but a symbolic gesture. It is theorized that flags left
on the moon during the Apollo era have faded to white under the sun’s harsh ultraviolet rays. Just something else you
might not know.
I, personally, could have cared less about men walking on the moon as I was incredibly pregnant, hot and miserable. Baby
Crissy arrived July 30th, just a few days after the historic moon walk.
One last thing…give yourself a fabulous treat and watch, “Young Woman and the Sea.” You’ll find it on Disney+. This
is the story of Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel. “21 miles and a nice day for a swim!” She
overcame so much adversity from just about everybody to complete this epic swim, faster than the man who had done
it before her. It’s simply a great movie and you’ll find yourself cheering for Trudy all along the way. Gertrude first won a
gold medal at the 1924 Olympic Games and in 1926 swam the English Channel. Really, sit down and watch an excellent
portrayal of this heroic woman.
Have a fabulous time tomorrow night with Harry/Elvis and sing along. Best time ever!

SIERRA MADRE GIRLS SOFTBALL 12U SILVER ALL
STARS MAKE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME AT JR.
OLYMPICS TOURNAMENT
Sierra Madre Girls Softball Association’s incredible All Stars
summer continued as the 12U Silver “Hustle” All Stars made it to the
Championship Game at the USA Softball State Games (Jr. Olympics C
Regionals) in San Diego this past weekend, as one of the two top teams
out of the more than 1,000 all stars teams at the tournament.
This incredible achievement marked the end of 12U Hustle’s summer
All Stars journey, which started on May 8 and continued with six days
a week of softball practices and games. 12U Hustle’s commitment
and hard work led to 25 victories out of 38 games played in high level
tournaments across Southern California, often battling in triple digit
heat. These girls dug deep and proudly represented Sierra Madre at the
highest levels of competition.
And that’s not all–our All Stars season continues as three more
SMGSA All Stars teams are on their way to National level tournaments
in Oregon and Washington State at the 10U, 12U and 14U Gold levels
over the next weekend, thanks to the support and dedication of our
community.
Want to join in on the action? Fall season registration is open now at smgsa.org, with practices and games scheduled to start in
September. SMGSA will offer both regular and more competitive select team options. For more information, visit smgsa.org and
