REMEMBRANCE

LONGTIME SIERRA MADRE RESIDENT JERRY BURNETT PASSES AWAY

Jerry Howard Burnett was born on August 11, 1931 and passed away
peacefully on August 22, 2024 at the age of 93. He attended and
graduated from Tulare Union High School before earning a degree in
Commerce and Finance from Occidental College. Jerry married his
college sweetheart, Dorothy (Dottie), on July 10, 1954. After serving
overseas for 2-1/2 years with the US Army, they settled in Sierra
Madre, California.

Jerry had a successful career in financial management, starting as
a Controller at Royal Industries. He later served on the Financial
Auditing Team, contributing his expertise to the aerospace and
defense sectors. Jerry and Dottie hosted five separate foreign exchange
students, one returning to become an American citizen and who has
stayed very close to the family (like a 3rd son). Jerry was very active
in community service, dedicating years to the Sierra Madre Kiwanis
and supporting the Creative Arts Group in Sierra Madre. He was also
a 35-year member of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses.

He and Dottie were honored by Occidental College in 2019 for
their enduring commitment to education, alumni involvement and
dedication to Occidental. (https://mtnviewsnews.com/v13/htm/n31/
p01.htm)

An avid traveler, Jerry and Dottie explored numerous countries
which included multiple RV adventures across the United States and Canada. They loved tennis, regularly attending
professional tournaments. Jerry is survived by his wife of 70 years, Dorothy (Dottie), his two sons Robert (Rosemary)
and Brian (Kay). He has three granddaughters, Amanda (Manny), Paige and Karina; and two great-grandchildren
Hunter and Owen. He is also survived by the “3rd son”, exchange student Robin Bartolo and his wife Jenni.

Jerry will be deeply missed for his spirit, dedication to family, and passion for lifelong learning and adventure. Instead of
sending flowers, we kindly ask that you make a memorial donation in his name to an organization that holds significance
for you.

WALKING SIERRA MADRE - The Social Side

by Deanne Davis

“THE ICEMAN COMETH”

 Eugene O’Neill

This is a really depressing play about a bunch of sad,
unhappy people living in a flophouse. Why, you’re asking,
am I referencing this? Remember a week or so ago when
I talked about the ice maker in my refrigerator ceasing to
make ice? Well, the Ice Maker Repair Man did come last
week and he was just as depressing as this play. No good
news at all. “Well,” he said, “hear that noise?” I really
hadn’t heard anything till he mentioned it. “I guess,” I
replied wittily. “That’s your compressor. It’s about to go.”
“Swell,” I thought. “Buying a new ice maker ($200+) would
be a waste of money if your compressor is going.”

So, bottom line on ice is, we’re now buying 8 lb. bags at
Safeway, 2 for $5. And I’m wondering if this refrigerator
I’ve only had for six years will keep going. “It might go out
tonight and it might last another ten years,” he said with a
hearty laugh. I was not amused.

The Scarecrow
Festival is
starting! All
over town our
immensely
creative people
will be putting
up fabulous
creations. That’s
today’s picture.
One from last
year. I love this
time of year. Fall!

Starbucks is
selling Pumpkin
Spice Lattes. I
haven’t gotten
there yet,
but possibly
tomorrow!

Peter Dills and
a bunch of other
people are highly recommending 355 Burger. Rumor has it
that the 355 refers to the Sierra Madre telephone number.
Ours for all the years we lived on Alegria was 355-8710.
I’m pretty sure they are located where the Lunch Box used
to be a long time ago. Crissy and I loved going there for
breakfast and that’s where I encountered my very first
Breakfast Burger: A big burger with onions, cheese and a
fried egg. I’d never had anything so good! The 355 menu
is pretty simple so far, just a burger and fries or a double
burger with fries, but I’m sure when they get settled in
they’re going to offer a breakfast burger with a fried egg
that drips all down your hand when you eat it. Good times,
friends and neighbors!

As it’s still hot, I’ve been doing a lot of reading instead
of wandering around outside. Several great books to
recommend:

The Eight, published 1988, is American author Katherine
Neville's debut novel. “It is an adventure/quest novel in
which the heroine, computer whiz Catherine Velis, must
enter into a cryptic world of danger and conspiracy in
order to recover the pieces of a legendary chess set once
owned by Charlemagne and buried for one thousand
years. The Eight features two intertwined storylines set
two centuries apart. The first takes place in the 1970s and
follows Catherine "Cat" Velis as she is sent to Algeria for
a special assignment. The second is set in the 1790s and
revolves around Mireille, a novice nun at Montglane
Abbey, in the French Pyrenees.”

I loved The Eight so much I continued with the follow-
up book, The Fire. “Set in Colorado in 2003, Alexandra
Solarin is summoned home to her family’s ancestral Rocky
Mountain hideaway for her mother’s birthday. Thirty
years ago, her parents, Cat Velis and Alexander Solarin,
believed that they had scattered the pieces of the Montglane
Service around the world, burying with the chessmen the
secrets of the power that comes with possessing them. But
Alexandra arrives to find that her mother is missing–and
that the Game has begun again.”

Those were riveting and so was John Grisham’s Camino
Ghosts. There’s a curse, a lot of people ending up dead and,
as usual, Grisham doesn’t disappoint.

Could not believe that horrible people are breaking into
our beloved Pioneer Cemetery and stealing grave markers.
How low can you get. My beloved John’s marker with his
life verse, Micah 6:8 is there. I hope they are found, arrested
and put away forever! A heinous crime, committed by
craven ghouls!

I’m stocking up on pumpkin and getting ready to make
pumpkin cookies, pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins. So
ready for Fall! I’m sure you are, too.

“I am falling in love with Autumn, the smell of warm cider,
the orange-colored leaves,

pumpkins everywhere and a crisp, cool breeze.” Charmaine
J. Forde

“Only the knife knows what goes on in the heart of a
pumpkin.” Simone Swarz-Bart
