WALKING SIERRA MADRE -
The Social Side by Deanne Davis
6-Day Forecast Sierra Madre, Ca.
“One of the most glorious messes in the world is the mess created
in the living room on Christmas Day. Don’t clean it up too quickly.”
Andy Rooney
“What is Christmas? It is the tenderness of the past, courage for the
present, and hope for the future.” Agnes M. Pahro
“Love came down at Christmas; love all lovely, love divine. Love was
born at Christmas, stars and angels gave the sign.” Christina Rosetti
Christmas is almost behind us. I’m writing Walking Sierra Madre
on Christmas Eve. Hard to believe tomorrow is Christmas Day. My
Christmas cards are in the mail as of this morning, I have one last
present to wrap. “Lessons in Chemistry” for Emily, then pack up all
the presents for Jessie and Emily and transport them to their house.
Much to my joy and relief, all my gift cards got to the right place and
everyone is happy.
Tomorrow we are having quantities of Panda Express along with a
little rum-laced eggnog. Jessie and I watched “A Christmas Story”
this week, the dear old classic where Ralphie wants a Red Ryder 200
Shot BB gun more than anything in the world. As you’ll recall, this
movie ends with the entire family going out for Chinese food. It’s
perfect! We also watched “A Christmas Story Christmas,” the follow-
up to “A Christmas Story” and enjoyed both of them thoroughly.
After tomorrow we can all sit down, take a breath, and give ourselves
a minute to recuperate before we start planning for the New Year.
2024 passed with what felt like the speed of light and now 2025 is just
around the corner. I’m planning on leaving Christmas up just a little
longer; let my head-turning lighted reindeer stay out in back just a
little longer, and not be too quick to de-Christmas-ify. The picture is a magical snowman that appeared in Kersting Court one year
and I love seeing this so much I want you to enjoy it, too. Start thinking what your word for the year 2025 is going to be. I’ll share
mine next week.
The world hasn’t gotten a lot better this past year, but I’ve noticed that people seem to be kinder and friendlier, more doors are held
open, more humorous comments are exchanged on the grocery lines and more people are smiling at each other for no reason at all.
Of course, I have a tendency to look at the world through rose-colored glasses so this could just be selective viewing. I came across
this piece of advice not long ago and thought I’d pass it on to you dear friends and neighbors: “When in doubt, seal your lips and see
what happens. Some silences will communicate far beyond words. Some silences will communicate nothing, which might turn out
to be precisely what the topic warrants.”
“What a wonderful story it is, The Christmas Story. Only God could have thought of it!”
Norman Vincent Peale
I have put “Directions for Planting” in my column before, but this seems like a really good time, just a few days before the New Year
begins, to pass it along to you again. A perfect way to end a year which has had ups and downs for all of us.
I keep this beautiful piece hidden away at the bottom of the Christmas card basket, “Directions for Planting,” taken from the writings
of Margaret Hooper Ineson, a precious saint of God and beloved member of our family. Born on November 22, 1904, she entered
the gates of heaven on November 11, 2000...just a few days short of her 96th birthday. She lived her life according to her “Directions
for Planting.”

BRING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH THE PERFECT
RESOLUTION - ONE YOU CAN ACTUALLY KEEP
No doubt if you are reading this, you have an affinity for the idyllic foothill village of Sierra Madre. It is a town within
miles of the country's 2nd largest metropolis that manages to mesmerize residents and visitors alike with its beauty,
serenity, opportunities and history. It's a town where you see every single day people living life to the fullest, enjoying
nature, walking, hiking, and riding their bikes. You see parents and grandparents strolling through the town with
their children, some of whom are still in carriages. You see people enjoying the shops and restaurants in town and
having fun while doing so. You don't see red lights, congestion and an overwhelming feeling of a fast paced life.
And, every single month, there is an event or activity for residents and visitors to enjoy. Whether it is the Wistaria
Festival, the Mount Wilson Trail Race, the Fourth of July Parade, the Halloween Festivities, Art Shows and more....
there is always something going on for the entire family in Sierra Madre. Sierra Madre, the 2007 recipient of the
national All American City Award!
Ever wonder how all that happens? Without question Sierra Madre has the best municipal services around, the best
Police and Fire Departments, the best city staff. However, that in and of itself is not enough. The real life blood of
Sierra Madre are its volunteers.
Without the generosity of time and talent of literally dozens of residents and business owners who support Sierra
Madre's civic organizations, this would be a very different place.
Yes, volunteers are the life blood of this town. It is the one thing that we always agree on, all the time!
So, about that New Year's Resolution.....make a commitment to become a part of the solution to sustaining this great
city! There are lots of ways you can do that and it's actually a resolution you can keep!
In Section B of this edition of the Mountain Views News, you can learn a little about the groups that sustain this
community. No matter how long you have been around, you will be pleasantly surprised to learn what these groups
do and more importantly, how you can help support them and contribute to the magnificence of this city.
Think about it......Happy New Year
